1985 190D Blowing Fuse #10

Hello,

My car is blowing the fuse in spot 10. As soon as the engine is running it blows. The first Blow was Friday Afternoon at the top of Bethound Pass in Colorado. And then again today at the same place. But it is now blowing all the time when a new fuse is put in and the car is started.

Do you guys have any ideas?

I am really not sure about this and could easily be wrong....... but maybe the first thing to do is identify the electrical accessories governed by the mysterious #10 fuse.

The fuse in #10 spot covers the following. (It's a Bridge Connection of 9 and 10 spot.)

Coolant fan and clock, Cruise Control & Gauages, Tach, wiper/washer, EGR and Tranmission Kickdown, Anti Lock Brakes, Stop and Backup Lights, Cruise Control, Gauges and Warning indicators.

I would start with the fiddly bits - wiper/wash, tach, seats, fan, cruise - disconnect each where they plug into the wiring harness. Then see if one or the other disconnected prevents the fuse from blowing.

Am unfamiliar with the 190D so cannot comment on typical weaknesses of one system or another. And look for chafed wires too. Also see if fuses blow with ignition switch on (but not with the engine started) while trying the electrics.

(edit: Anti-lock brakes you say?? They can be disconnected leaving you with normal power brakes that are fine. I think the computer brain box for them is multi-million dollar repair.

I will get my hands dirty with this tomorrow. But does anyone else who has or had a 190d have any comments for me?

I did replace the fuse this morning to see what would happen and it did blow about 15 miles from my house.

Some more info.

The fuse does not blow when the key is turned to the glow postion. It has blown as soon as the engine is running. Today it I replaced the fuse and was able to go 15 miles before it blew out.

Hmm, from what you just said I'd suspect the tach - should be easy to disconnect under the hood to help isolate the problem.

Some vacuum cables go into that. I could post a picture if you need to see
