240D Injector Pump Spare
Purchased a 240 pump for a 123 chassis and going to have it as a spare. Price was right.
Any thoughts on laying these units up for storage please so the internals stay in good condition. Regards Tom Scordato 1979 240D |

Same here, recently I bought a 300D fuel pump...
Same here, recently I bought a 300D spare fuel pump...I put mine in a plastic container but really don't know what the official way to store it is...maybe I will swap it in and out every year The one last thing I want as a spare is a Transmission because I know where one is, but I'm not thrilled about pulling it

Store it like you would a short or long block. Make sure it has a good coat of oil to prevent rust, wrap it up and store in in a dry area. Something that size should be fine wrapped up, in a box stored in a closet in the house. The less humidity and temp differentials it gets to see while off the car, the better.

I can see it now. My wife reaches for her best evening scarf, she's already got a nice dress on. We're late for a party and she's in a dither. She reaches up into a pile of boxes in the dark closet with her white dinner gloves..."hmmmm. whats in that box", she wonders to herself, as she works her hand under the cover......SHREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK

Better than a tranny in the bathtub!
My wife would do the same until I ask her would she rather store this one or spring for a new one to the tune of $600+

If you are going to store them partially dry a sealed plastic container seems in order. Like a five gallon bucket with an airtight lid. Using moisture absorbant material to absorb atmospheric moisture as well. You want no surface rust in those bores. I still preffer to store with light oil in them partially submerged. Nothing will dry out like seals and no chance of rust at all. I almost would rather leave a pump on an engine outside than store it dry. These are just personal choices by the way. Mine might be wrong. I have a pump stored out in the garge dry right now. I will not know much about it until it goes back into service. It was fine when pulled. If I had wet stored it I would be more certain it was still ok. Remember a pump going into storage might be there for far longer than you suspect.

A great idea
I have an idea which I will do tonight. I will hook it up to my fuel system, but of course, not mount it. I have plenty of extra fittings.
In fact thinking of it more, I have the filter assembly from an old engine. So I will hook it up to a diesel fuel supply and turn the front nut over with an air wrench so it spins say 100 revs and get some fuel "popping" out of it. I will also use a pump gun to push oil into the lube port will doing so. I will repeat this 4x an year. But thinking of it even more, I once bought a pump that sat for more than an year OUTSIDE on a used engine and it ran very very well. |

Carrameow, the injection pump sitting on the engine outside for a year was oil filled around the bores sitting. Thats why I preffer them to dry pumps that have sat around. The bore clearances are not like a normal piston and ring. They are metal to metal basically with very fine lapped finishes. As for the automatic you do not wish to pull for a spare. I might find a couple of young guys that I trust to pull the box and torque converter for me if I was absolutly sure it was a good transmission. Plus I just was not willing to do it myself at the time. At some point not too far away they will become scarce. The old adage is if you have one spare your present transmission will never drop out on you. On the otherhand if you do not it will may apply here. Also it could be sold in the future if you ever needed to. . I have run out of good storage space almost at present. Built more ten years ago and only achieved filling that up as well. A pack rat may have nothing on me. Recently someone has offered me a really good blue interior with pretty good dash pad for 100.00. Two really small cracks and I mean small as this is not an ebay add. You cannot see one for example. I really should go get it as it includes the carpets and side panels with everything still pretty good. I justify not moving on it because where am I going to put it? When or where will it be used? If I was searching for the stuff or needed it I would never find examples anywhere near this good. Not even the slightest driver seat sag or mar for starters. Perhaps I should follow my own suggestion and hire two young guys to go get it before it is gone to the wreckers. He told me it was going before the snow flies. On the otherhand if not gotten. Five years from now I can rave how I passed by an almost perfect complete blue complete 123 interior for 100.00. I suspect I can include all the electric window gear and modules as well in the price. Perhaps your post will give me the motivation to get it now. Might already be too late though.

I have stored one and I flush out the "crankcase" part of the pump to remove all of the used crancase oil. I then put some ATF in the crancase of the pump. I also ran ATF through the fuel side of the pump.

Younger Guys? Don't think that way

I pulled a perfect Black interior too and put it in my car. I even grabbed the headliner and every plastic piece I could find and the rear panel below the window. The Seats were perfect Leather Black. The carpet was fresh new, it was $130. It was the BEST THING I ever did, because it turned my car from a smelly junker into a perfect restore. The old interior I discarded was the mustard yellow, it was so disgusting. |
