Power Steering Filter

I just looked at whunter's how to on the power steering filter replacement.

Since it was on an '85 126, I was wondering if the procedure is the same for an '82 123.

I could not find any record of the filter being changed on my car.

Thanks!

Excellent news! I just did not see the tan colored plastic on my pump.

Thanks!

Now that your question is answered, I am gonna hijack this thread I have a 83 300cd and I noticed some "stuff" in the filter/fluid housing but no filter. I checked inside the 81 300sd I got in for salvage the other day and it had no filter in it either? My CD had a fiber ring in there but it was definitely not a filter of any type I have seen before. I owned a 83 300d and it had a regular filter in it. Looked like a "mini-airfilter". Do some of these cars not take a filter or do people take them out for one reason or the other? Looked like I may have been missing some hardware as well.......Anyone else????

Go for it! The more info I glean, the better informed I am at repair/maint time! It is possible that they took the filter out and discarded everything, after all, the system is closed, and you don't "really need" a filter in a closed system right?

When I removed the cap on my PS pump, I do not recall seeing a spring or additional hold down nut for a filter...

The parts manual and Service manual for the 617/616 shows a fiber ring for a filter. That is the old filter. The new filter is as shown in this link

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/134374-power-steering-filter-replace-post986942.html

I had the fiber ring in my 82 300TD and replaced it with the new filter. The old ring filter seems washable and reusable, I replaced it anyway.

You need a filter in a closed system... without a doubt. They are very cheap insurance.
