Fan Belt Replacement Reminder
I've had this happen to me once on my 85 and noticed it on the 84 that I just got that PO worked on.
When replacing (or renewing as Daimler would say) fan belt on 84/85 300D (and maybe other years), you know that you have to unbolt 3 bolts that go to the PS pump in order to loosen the tension. Then loosen the tensioner bolt. The reminder would be to not loosen the 3 bolts too much as it could dislodge the receiver of the tensioner bolt. The receiver (looks like a black rubber piece) is hidden between the PS pump body and the part that it bolts to on the engine side. Also, not to loosen the tensioner bolt too much as it could cause similar problem. I noticed the other day that my belt was loose so I checked around and noticed that the tensioner bolt was hanging out of the hole - not screwed in. PO must have changed belt, unscrewed tensioner and the other 3 bolts but did know how the tensioner worked when putting it back. PO only used the 3 bolts. Luckily, the tensioner bolt did not fall off. If you happen to dislodge the receiver part which was how my 84 came, totally unbolt and slide out the PS pump without removing it and work the receiver back in place. The reciver has a protrusion that fits into a hole in the PS pump body. Make sure that this is lined up. Once in place, screw the tensioner bolt to it so it stays in place while you rebolt the PS pump back in place. Then adjust your tension accordingly.

Ah, the power steering pump belt, not the "fan" belt. The fan belt is loosened at the alternator.
