Source for Key Blanks?

Y'all,

I've been looking for key blanks for my '84 300td but haven't been able to find them so far (Atlanta area). Online sources (including Fastlane and other Worldpac suppliers) only show the plastic head piece. Is the dealer the only source for these, or is there an online supplier that I can get them from?

TIA,
Shawn

Keep in mind the Dealer key is a steel blank vs a brass one, which can damage your lock cylinders over time. I get all my keys at the dealer. Cheaper than having to put a ignition lock cylinder in there over time.

Really?
Why is steel better on the lock cylinders than bras? I would think the softer metal would damage the soft copper tumblers less than steel would.

The theory is that the brass leaves fine filings in the key lock as it is used over time. I have a brass key for my 82 300TD since 1982 and have never had to replace the cylinder.
With a brass key you can sometimes see the small brass filings just below the ignition tumbler on the dash. A slight gold coloring. this is what they are talking about.

Just go to your dealer with your Drivers License and Insurance Card, they can cut a key on the spot most of the time, sometimes it has to be cut in Dallas for me, so I'll have it the next day.

VStech, I've been told my lots of indies and read on here, that its better to use the steel key. To each their own!

winmutt,

Thanks for the info about Decatur lock & key. I'm over that way every two years or so, so I should be able to stop by next year...

That'd be a great way to go if the car had the original ignition switch, but given that the door locks are all the same and the ignition is the odd one out, I expect it's not original. I've done the same for my BMW 535i and have had new master & valet keys made. The BMW dealers, however, require your license and a copy of the title showing you as the owner. I might end up going there to have a non-VIN-based key cut, though.

Same thing when I bought my Anthricite Grey SDL. I had a W123 style non laser key for ignition and laser for all the doors/trunk. I ordered a new lock cylinder, it was less than 80 bucks and came with a new key to boot!

I have seen both the #39 and #41 listed for the W123 (even in the same book) which one is correct? They both fit.

the 39 is for the keys that have the thicker line down the middle. but as mentioned, at the age of these cars, either one will work.

Thumbs up

They're less than $16 from the dealer for a PERFECTLY cut key to your VIN on steel. There isn't much to think about from there on out... I get all mine there.
