1969 220D idle racing

My brother's 220D idle races when it is warmed up. He's measured the linkage and confirmed that the measurements are all correct. What could be causing this? It isn't burning oil, but the idle (even this the idle control turned down) is up around he thinks 1800 rpm. Fuel economy is good too. I've heard it's possible it's the leather diaphram in the IP and it needs soaking, but does anyone else have an idea?

Also, does anyone want to buy it? It's got no rust, but needs a new paint job. His wife doesn't like driving it it's a 4 speed manual.

220d racing?

I wish I knew what I was talking about on some of these cars I have never worked on. Nobody has responded yet so here goes. Does that model still have the flap in the intake circuit of the manifold? It may not be flapping properly so to speak. There might also be an unusual vacuum, control on that injection pump that is bad in some way. With my insite it probably does not even have the mentioned flap as it may be too new a model. You may have to look at a service manual or wait for someone with a lot more knowledge than me to comment. When you mentioned a racing 220d model of course that got my attention. You also mentioned your wife does not like the car so does anyone want to buy it. As a fellow canadian I like to help. As I see it you have a couple of options. You can sell the car and keep the wife or sell the wife and keep the car. Besides fooling around a little there was something valid I wanted to mention. I would post this problem on the vintage section. Also the for sale in the on board classified section. We have guys on that site that will consider your model quite modern. Plus guys that either own them or remember working on them. I am just too young.

does it smoke at all? on the old style injection pumps with there own oil supply there is a leather diaphram that can go bad. one side of the diaprham has vacume pressure from the manifold. if there is a hole in it it suck oil into the intake manifold.

smokes

It is smoking right now, although not burning a whole lot of oil. It does have the butterfly flap on the intake.

We'll try taking out the leather diaphragm from the spare IP and soak it and replace it.

Thanks.
