Turbo Seals

Good Morning All;

I have a 1986 300SDL. I have localized my oil consumption to turbo seals. The engine has no appreciable Blow-by and does not smoke (other then typical black smoke on hard acceleration). The EGR vacuum line is plugged. The interior surfaces of the EGR pipe, the intake crossover pipe and the intake manifold are a wet, oily, black, sticky, gooey mess. It would appear that the turbo seals are leaking and the oil is being distributed into the engine and used as fuel. It is using a teaspoon every 3 miles on average (650 per quart).

How hard would it be for me to change the turbo seals? I have good mechanical skills and varied tools. I have a bench top hydraulic press. Is this something I can undertake myself or am I better served sending the turbo out for a re-seal?

If it is a DIY job, what is the best source for parts? If not, who is recomended for a re-seal job? I am in So Cal but am willing to ship the turbo for a better job.

Thanks

What turbocharger is on your SDL? The Garrett or the KKK?

How do I tell them apart? I will go look at it and see if a manufacturers stamp is visible on it.

Thanks

Can you take a quick picture? The Garrett has a big bronze colored wastegate visible up front, the KKKs is hidden.

If it's a Garrett you can try a kit from http://www.turbocity.com/default.php?cPath=15_20

I don't know what makes #300-200 different from #300-300 other than that one spool.

They list both part #'s for an 86 Mercedes 300 series, 49 state and/or California version. They dont state whether or not the kit is for a KKK a Garrett. I'll give them a call Monday.
