The hair on top has decided to start falling out instead of turning gray. I have a good bit of gray hair in my beard that fortunately does not show up in pictures very well.

I was thinking it was an ironhead sporty with a big ole SU carb on it. Motor is pretty well hidden in that pic, though.

Nope, an old iron Sportster

My older brother owned a BSA for about a week in 1975 until my mother made him get rid of it.

My sled is a 72 Sportster (Harley Davidson), the first year of the 1000ci motors, which I've proudly owned since 1988. Being a crossover year it has some unique features in the engine and transmission which made for an adventure when I rebuilt them about ten years ago. The SU carb and hardtail rear probably give it the old english chopper look. The frame has been converted from a swingarm to the solid rear and heavily raked. There's not enough clearance under the tank for the dome of the SU carb so the intake manifold has that big goofy extension to get that sucker out in the wind. It's a pretty unique bike and I still have an ancient pair of orange and yellow Converse extra-high top sneakers to match the paint job.

The best part is that I built it myself in my living room (I was younger and much more single) like choppers are supposed to be instead of buying a new "custom" bike off the lot of some chopper factory store. It's hilarious to see a group of guys coming out of the gym and all hopping on their "custom built" bikes that are exact replicas of each other except for the color of the paint. They need to spend less time watching Orange County Choppers on TV and more time in the garage twisting wrenches.

My this has really gone off topic hasn't it?
