I just picked one of those up at the junk yard the other day for $5. I just assumed I was missing mine, didn't think it was a euro only item.

I got mine from a 240D, it was still in the factory location mounted to the underside of the trunk lid. I had to get creative to find a place for it in my W124 TD though.

I have an american one, in a yellow case that fits in the slot in the back of the TD... that euro one looks cool.

Cool but...

fire is cooler. I carry a few flares in the back of my car. It involves flame which is a definate plus, and I believe it gets more attention especially at night. I drive a lot of back country roads, and think this is very important if I ever have to change a tire just around a curve. It certainly helps anywhere. If you want to spend $22+ be my guest. I'll stick with my $1 flares and not bid it up.

Why are these rare? They ship with new audis, so new parts should be available. My 300CD (1982 Euro Delivery) has one in the trunk hatch.

They are rare because the US spec cars had them removed by our all knowing gov't.

For the sedans and coupes, in a breakdown you can either set them on the road or leave the trunk open, and they will be seen either way, your choice

I got a couple with their clips from a kind German ebayer who grabbed a couple from a junkyard in Berlin and carried them over and mailed them from Mississipi. I sent the other to a fellow in Portland for his '82 300SD. I paid $25 each for them, and they cleaned up very nice.

The German guy Sven found a nice unrusty pale yellow '62 220SEb cabrio with a dead engine which he bought for his father and had it shipped back to Germany to have the engine rebuilt.

I don't know why the DOT forced US buyers to do without them. I heard that some folks who bought new cars in Germany on the Euro delivery plan actually took them home as carry on luggage and got to keep them that
way.

I see these at the JY all the time. I think they charge $5 or so for them there as well...a guy I go with buys them and sells them on eBay now and again. Anywhere from $20 to $45 or so.
