1983 300D With Under 40k??

What would a 83 300D, in impecable condition, everything works, garage kept, under 40k, and original owner be worth? Sorry, no pictures, I have not gotten to see it yet, but his wife died long ago, and the car only gets taken out of the garage every other month or so. He is moving, and now is willing to let it go. My friend has seen it, and says its amazing looking!

Offer $3000 and see what the response is. I saw in a book that listed all cars that a 100% show 300D is worth $17,500. I can't remember the name of the book, but it was a collectors price guide I saw at Borders. IF the car is as described, it would get a lot on flea bay.

I saw a great looking deep blue 123 chassis 300D in a parking lot. I hung around until the owner came out of the store, he was an elderly (well, a decade or two older than me!) man. The car had under 50K showing on the odometer, like 42K or something I couldn't believe. Man said he drove it twice a week and not too far. He said his daughter suggested it for its safety. I was tempted to make an offer but just said thanks for the talk and walked away. I would have paid something like $8K and felt it was a steal. Its the cars that have been garaged most of their life, you know with the speedometer face and pointer still orange, not faded yellow, and the owner has records for a reputable shop or the dealer where regular service is done. That is the kind of car you want to find and buy. Let us know if you get it!

Hope this works out welll for you. Depending how you read people and your approach may be more important to the individual than the actual amount of coin. Usually these cars are spoken for by a family friend or someone years earlier.. Not always of course. Everyone should luck into something like this at least once in a lifetime. Many times the oportunity is lost or not recognized. See him as soon as posssible and take a decent deposit. Also get a reciept if you can get a deal together. Five thousand or less would strike me as a good deal. Three perhaps a steal. It is very unlikely he would know the true marketable value that has to be ten thousand and up in my opinion. One of my aquaintences sold his very rare mint low milage collector truck this year. Perhaps one of the most sought after models and very rare. Fifty five, fifty six or seven standard cab chevrolet with a somewhat futuristic bed. It has a special name but I cannot recall it at the moment. He got twenty five thousand. He just was unaware his mint truck would have been admissable at the best antique auto auction houses in the states. Think 50-75 thousand it could have brought. Perhaps even higher as some auction vehicles have been going far beyond reason, If for some reason you cannot get to where you want in the negotiations or he just wants more than you are willing to pay drop me a private message. I am not a total vulture. I even pay a finders fee sometimes. It's a 300d remember and not quite worth as much as the sdl in my opinion. So a potential 30k is out of the question I believe. Could still be a nice find though. We could start a pool to guess how much he wants. I guess 5,500 unless he is almost senile. The truth is you will never really know until you get into it. Let us know but if you get it for 300.00 it might shock some.

Beware. Low mileage is no indicator of quality. It is however an indicator of lack of use.

Lack of use I think is the deal! Bad for seals and such, I found out two of the calipers are sticking, maybe a collapsed hose? But regardless it is b/c of lack of use!

i live just west of you. in houston. i have driven to austin and dallas looking for cars. i was lucky enough to find one with a majority of the records intact and only 3 owners before me. I got my 80 300D for 1500.havent been able to get into it a lot but so far, its in very very very good mechanical shape. the little things dont bother me. I would have paid double that for one like you are describing, but it seemed like the ones for that price werent any better than the one i bought. some of them were actually worse. go take some pics of the car and post them.

Well, a friend of mine (my mechanic, actually) sold a nearly perfect 84 300CD with just over 30K original miles for $25K. This car looked and ran like new, he only drove it to car shows to keep the miles down. I saw it win best of class at a local show a couple of years ago. I would be afraid to drive it.

That is great news that the brakes are sticking etc. Should tend to keep the price of the car way down. Much more than what the simple repairs should cost. He obviously does not want to deal with the issues himself. Or pay to have them done. In a way this deal gets better. Also indicates he does not have any perception of the true market potential or the car would have been fixed in my opinion. I think you should do well on this deal. Best of luck.
