Need more power!!

Ok, I know the 79 240 D was not designed to be a speed demon, however I feel like I could get more torque if I Fred Flintstoned the darn thing. I'm new to the deisel world, so I don't have too much experience here. I've built classic mustangs for years. Now I know I'll never get the 390 hp I got from my old muscle 'stang but there has to be some way to beef my little 4 cyl deisel. Anyone got any suggestions?

Make sure you are getting all 67 HP...change the fuel filters, time the injection pump, adjust the valves, check your timing chain stretch and install offset key or new chain if necessary.

IF you have an EGR on your model, plug it with something...
then
THINK about learning how to check the timing on the Injection Pump [ " IP " ].
Just as with a GAS engine, you can sacrifice a little fuel economy and obtain a little more "spunk". With my 1980 240D I lost ~2 mpg but gained noticeable improvement in accelleration... but lost a little top-end speed.
Regards,

Greetings and welcome.
You have one of the slowest production cars ever, and if it has an auto-tranny, even slower. Embrace your little rock-sled for it's reliability and simplicity. 67hp in a near 3500lb vehicle only does so much......
Maybe get another Mustang for the weekends......

The first day she drove our '79 240d, my wife called me to complain. "This car is so slow, people are honking at me at lights!"

She's gotten used to it. I actually love it specifically because there's nothing to do in it but cruise. You can't be stressed about getting somewhere quickly when it takes 2 miles to get up to freeway speed...it just takes the burden of feeling rushed in the car away from you. That's not always such a bad thing.

Don't try to race any worn Volkswagen vans from the 60s & 70's, or mopeds or bicycles or pedestrians..... You will lose.
So put that in your tailpipe and smoke it!

So just keep telling your wife....
"But at least you are driving one of the finest engineered German motorcars that has ever been built in the history of mankind of the universe."... Keep repeating the mantra until you both believe it.

Try this... while you are getting passed by everyone getting on the freeway, think about Armageddon... (Anyone watch Jericho?) An EMP explodes above the US and every computer is instantly fried... all the cars around you are now 3,000 LB road blocks... but not your little 240D.... you may have some trouble getting out of traffic... but you are the last man standing...

OK another Dooms day vision... the US is cut off from all foreign oil. Gas is rationed, and people are scrambling to get fuel... but you are one step ahead all you have to do is raid the stinky Oil disposal bin behind the local KFC...

OK OK snap back to Reality... think about this. 30 years from now with you are getting passed by hover cars... but yet you are still driving the 240D, why? Because it’s not dead yet!

It’s not about driving fast... it’s about the fact that you are driving quite possibly the most reliable car on the planet. Oh and is has leather seats.
