Excellent choice of materials. It may be a bit more expensive than buna. It may be hard to measure those little suckers to make sure you get the right size. But once your o-rings are replaced with viton o-rings your worries should be over. I think it is worth the effort.

Everything I identify I buy a pack of and sell the spares on my site.

Hey, it's his option to do what he wants to his car. I'm not going to beat him up over it. He just seems to fall into the group that believes that if it was meant to be it would have been issued by Mercedes Benz. I fall into the group that is willing to try new things and take responsability for my own mistakes if I end up screwing up my car/engine. I just think it is a bit harsh to throw down the gauntlet with a statement like "I won't use biodiesel." It carries a connotation that the person making the statement views biodiesel as a curse and would never sully their fuel system with the evil Methlesters.
I don't have a problem with those who run bio, drop in Chevy V8s, or convert to full electric; it's just that I won't. Hence my words, "I won't use biodiesel". What I thought was funny was he started by saying it was my choice like he was open-minded, then he berates me as being such a purist that I won't consider an upgrade of an o-ring. So much for the open-mindedness.

Regardless, I'm honest; there's no hidden agenda to "I won't use biodiesel" than just what it means.

why wont you use biodiesel POS?

While i can understand why you wont use wvo or put in a veggie kit(as it can be more of a risk), i dont see anything wrong with biodiesel with these cars or any diesel car for that matter.

Open-minded does not mean that I have to agree with your opinion. It just means that I have to respect the fact that you will have your own opinion.

Just like I have my own opinion...

Since we are not working together toward a common goal and we are not bound together by some contract we do not need to go any farther that the "agree to disagree" stage. That is good enough for me. I'll keep enjoying playing with my beautiful experiment. You can keep enjoying your beautiful piece of engineering. We can both be happy.

O-Ring leaks

Engatwork,

There are "rubber' o-rings underneath the (or on top) of the fuel delivery
valves that can be replaced with Viton.

Agreed, Jim. Thanks for writing that.

I won't use bio because I see no need for it. I put $55 of fuel into the tank at $2.39, and it lasts me a week. When I'm not working or commuting, I'm spending as much time with my kids as possible. I have no time to search out bio's availability on a weekly basis; in addition, I'm into this car for the long haul (I want +300k miles) - to me, bio hasn't been proven for it's longevity.

Regardless, I never wanted this thread to get this out of hand. I was just curious if many other w124 owners had been experiencing fuel leaks lately - it seems odd to me that all of a sudden there's a rash of them.

My Euro 240D (uses the same delivery valve seals as the 603) was leaking on 3 out of 4. This started right after ULSD. It's fixed now. I am going to try giving it a dose of Marvel Mystery Oil with each fillup. I am hoping that might give it enough aromatics to keep the rubber pliable.

Still, the car has 140K miles on it and is probably due for having them changed but I strongly suspect ULSD pushed them over the edge.
I would not blame the ULSD. I replaced my delivery valbes seals at 62,000 miles this past summer before the ULSD was at the pumps. It is a weak point of the pump.

The reason I brought up the fuel type was that I got leaks when I ran straight LSD. When I ran at least 5% biodiesel or vegetable oil the leaks went away. Small price to pay to keep the leaks at bay. I'm sure it would be the same if I tried straight ULSD now. I'm down to 17% alt fuel (about 8% biodiesel and 9% filtered, dry WVO) and 83% ULSD. So far no leaks. Fuel economy is down, but no leaks. I'm going to go down to around B10 and try to run there.

I really need to get the two tank system set up. I don't really want to run straight WVO, but even the biodiesel that I make comes from oil that has a high animal fat content. Maybe 20% hamburger fat, 80% canola. The fuel starts getting Gel wisps at around 50F. By 30F or so it is too thick to be useful. I'll have to use a 5 gallon start up tank for 90% ULSD/10% VO or biodiesel. The heated main tank will hold a mix of the good canola oil from the top of the jugs. The mixed fats in the bottom will have to be converted to biodiesel. Maybe a little diesel thrown in for good luck.

Right now I am doing about 340 miles a week for work plus about 120 miles on the weekend. Alt fuel fits well in my life. That 340 miles for work includes a 160 miles down at the beginning of the week and 160 miles back at the end of the week. 4 lane highway miles. 65-70mph posted. I usually go about 8mph over that. It is a nice easy drive. Very little traffic coming in on Monday morning. OK traffic going back Thursday nights.

My 240D started spewing fuel oil out of the primer pump the second time I used ULSD.

It is no coincidence.
