'83 300 sd

First MB owned is a 1983 sd with 255K on it. The condition is nearly new and the engine was running well... until my son drove it for 5k miles. It starts easily, all the time, and revving it up is as smooth as can be. The problem is that when I take off it jerks, then runs, then jerks a bit again upon acceleration. The trans shifts ok--sometime spins for just a second, then catches and no problem. On the highway, it's got a lot of range in its power. The turbo has never, for as long as I've owned it, kicked in. But it does OK--somewhat of a dog until it gets on the highway, though, then it builds and is very powerful. The problem is that it's slow taking off, and the jerking, then smooth, then the jerking again. It doesn't seem to miss, just jerk or maybe hesitate. I don't think it's the tran. I've changed all filters--except tank filter, to no avail. As it warms up, seems to do it less.

This did not happen prior to my son using it for those 5k miles and I'll bet he let the gas run down to nearly empty a few times, at least.

search on "banjo bolt," "alda," and check the hard lines to and from both items for leaks, that should get you started.

As stated, clean the banjo bolts and line. It sounds like your turbo is working but these cars are not quick off the line and the turbo comes on gradually at around 2500 RPM. There are adjustments to the ALDA and boost control that can help but it still will not be a rocket ship off the line. Check all the fuel filters and try some diesel purge it might help with the stumbling. I have the same model and year and I have done all the above and it has helped.

Check the turbo switchover valve. Those do go out as well.

clean the boost line as others have said. then take on highway floor it from a dead stop.. should do 0-60mph in about 13 seconds or so....
if so then everything is working properly, lol.
