Thumbs up central locking problem

The car is an 87 300 SDL. I'm having problems. The driver door key will not lock or unlock, but if I reach in from the rear door and press button on drivers door with door closed all doors will lock. Passenger door key will lock and unlock, but pressing the button does not work. The trunk key worked both ways until today, now it will not lock. It does not seem to be a vacuum problem. I have had it locked for several days and it will unlock and lock again without running motor. Any details to inspect and repair will be appreciated.

Sounds like your driver's side tumbler is dirty.

This is for a W123, but your car should be similar: http://www.peachparts.com/Wikka/W123DoorLock

The passenger lock should not opperate the central locking system

Thanks!!! That is a great tutorial. The only thing is: the key at he passenger door and trunk did operate the central locking system when I bought the car. The performance has since deteriorated. Is it possible that all tumblers need to be cleaned as you recommend or could it be something else. Either way I greatly appreciate your responce

Hmmm...must be slightly different than the W123. It is most likely a problem with the vacuum valve in the passenger door if it will not operate the central locking system anymore. I would open it up and check it out.

I also have an '87 300D [new-to-me, will be the wife's] and the key in the passenger side lock does indeed lock and unlock everything.

Woops...must have misread your post. Check out the valve in the trunk. It is a two way valve and it sounds like one side is not working. Does the lock button on the passenger door do anything at all? It should just have a rod linking it to the lock assembly. Perhaps it has come loose.

Jeremy

The newer cars must be fancier. My W123s only have the central lock feature on the driver's door.

So! This really seems to require the knowledge of the humble who have not yet responded. Do any of you wisemen out there have this wisdom?

Yes, my 1985 W123 300D Turbo has central locking only with the driver's door. All the passenger lock does is lock and unlock the passenger door...on my car, barely that as there is something sticking in the linkage. I'm afraid to break off the key in the lock and so don't use that side until I can get in and fix the linkage.

It's nice to be able to walk your date to the passenger door and unlock the whole car from there, then walk around to the driver's side and get in. Alas, I no longer get to do that. ("...can't get away to marry you today, my wife won't let me.")

In my case the key slides in and out as best as you could expect.

This started with 1986/87s. Opening any lock, including the passenger door lock, opens all locks. Do not know when or if it has ended but my 94 S350 is the same. The vacuum valves in the doors going bad gets my vote.

The factory CD manual has a very detailed section on the central locking system of the 126 chassis cars.

I recently got my system up and running from a total non operational state. The diagrams were invaluable for diagnosing the problem areas in my system.

Manual can be had here for about $20: Manual Download

Hope this helps!

great pictorial, bgkast!! the passenger side of my 85 is a bit hard to turn with the key. This probably happens from lack of use. I'll try what you did and also take pictures of it before disassembling. May be a moderator can add it to your pictorial. Thanks!!
