New to om648 cdi

Hello i am proud new owner of 05 e320 cdi
My other 2 vehicles are 87tdt and 98 e300
Im kind of puzzled at the cdi especially with the little knowledge i Have on it.
Main quiestion is whats oil type and grade?
Mobil 1 esp is available in 0w30 5w30 40 etc
I have 80k miles since new.
Also is there any noticeable difference in hengst vs Mahle and Mann? Ive always been a solid Mann customer.
I thank you in adavance for any input.

I am not sure the ESP oil is required for the CDI, but it would not hurt to use it. I use ESP in the OM642 powered cars (Bluetec) because of the emissions equipment. Whatever oil filter you use, I believe there is one made for synthetic oil, and it has some kind of (fiberglass?) string wrapped around it. The standard filter has just the pleated paper. I have had two CDI's, and one Bluetec, and they are really great cars. Be sure to look for any signs of "Black Death" whenever you have the plastic cover off the top of the engine. Also, IMPORTANT: disconnect the big cable going to the SBC module whenever you work on the brakes!.

No ESP oil needed in that application. I'd suggest Mobil 1 15W40 diesel rated oil or similar. I run either Mobil 1 15W40 or Delo 400 synthetic in my 98 E300.

X2 what ROLLGUY said regarding black death. Caught early there is not much to it.

Oil should meet Bevo 229.5 and does not have to be ESP. M1 0W 40 meets this spec. and is readily available at Walmart at a good price. Oil change interval was designed for 12k mile when the car was introduced. As long as you are diligent with checking your oil level, I don't see any reason not to go out to this mileage.

I usually use Mann as well but Mahle and Hengst are also OEM and make excellent products.

I cant find the m1 here at my stores but they do have esp, ive never used 0w30 or even 5w30 in a diesel but called Mobil and they insist it needs esp to prevent emmisions clogging, im running Swepco 301 supreme formula on my 87 tdt and marine Amsoil 15w40 on the e300. What is this black death?

Amsol 15w40 should be fine. Person telling you to use ESP oil is not accurate.

Black death is where injectors start leaking at crush rings and it turns to something that has consistency of tar or harder. I would not put cover back on just so you can keep eye on it any time hood is open.

That is weird, around here, ESP oil is not stocked anywhere. I usually have to order it from Amazon or Walmart. The big chain auto parts stores don't even carry ESP oil. Practically every other M1 product is available at my local Walmart.

Pre-2007 MB diesels do not have particulate filters so ESP rated oil is not required. It is another reason the 2005-6 CDIs are so nice to own.

Yep the 07 and up that have the OM642 have a particulate filter and need the ESP oil.
Aka 229.52 sheet (the latest iteration).

However there is a Delvac that meets the spec as well.

We went through this a while back, I will see if I can find the thread where we figured out what oils meet what spec.

Here it is:

Well i opted out for Total Quarts 9000 energy in 5w 40.
Supposedly a fine oil from French company.
