Freeze Plug Wrench
Does anyone know the size of allen socket I would need to remove the freeze plug from my 240D engine. I want to install a block heater that I already have. I don't have an allen socket large enough and it is easier to ask someone who knows rather than experiment until I come up with the right one.

My correction. I guess they are not really freeze plugs. I am referring to the screw in plugs on the right side of the block that you take out to install the block heater.

Use the search function...
...that's what it's for!
If you search on "block heater allen" you will come up with many threads, including What size allen wrench on block heater plug? and that thread has several posts that say the plug uses a 19mm Allen wrench. The posters also say that, after 20 years or so, the plug is almost impossible to get out. But try anyway, maybe you will get lucky.

they will come out. i have had my indie install a couple of block heaters in older cars. 123s. you need a 3/4" drive breaker and probably some heat and a pipe to extend the bar. they are tough but they can be had! oh yeah, you will want the car on a lift too. probably not a do it yourself thing. it must be done from below.
the plus is that if they know what to bring to bear on the problem ahead of time and dont spin their wheels on it it shouldnt take too long to do. tom w
