clutch fan sticking
 

on my 280e the clutch fan seems to be stuck in the locked up mode. is there a way to lube this and free it up or is this a waste of time?

i guess i should say fan clutch.

This is a sealed unit.

any idea what might be making it bind?

I believe these fan clutches are designed with a little latching mechanism which allows the clutch to be locked to the fan should the clutch fail. It could be that this little locking latch has been inadvertently activated. As I recall, it is a little blade of metal that gets pushed into a latching slot onthe back of the clutch.
