Any major difference between 84 + 85 300D?
 

I know where there is a nice 300D with only like 146K on it. It has been family owned, 1st the grandfather, then the aunt for about 10K, now a grandchild. Working on getting more pictures of it. It's gold and they said the lowest is $3,200 which considering the mileage isn't to bad. Has been garaged its whole life, but it is a New England car so I'll have to have a close look to see how the rust is. What I'd like to know is wasn't the 85 like considered the best year and if so why? 84 and 85 should have the better auto tranny right?

'85 has different emission system, taller axle gear, and that's about it for major stuff.

Agreed.........if the condition warrants the price..........don't be overly concerned that you don't have the '85.

The largest benefit of the '85 is the 2.88 rear axle.......makes for much better cruise at 70 mph.

but their is the myth that the 85's were leaned out on the IP settings

My daughter has a Calif '85 300D and I too believe that the fueling was set up a little different. Granted it is a Cal model with the trap oxidiser but we took it to the dealer and they converted it to the modified type of cat that fit under the car.
It feels like it is retarded in fuel timing. It gits up and goes but it sounds flat. My wife had an '84 wagon and it ran real well. I would go with either..... the taller gearing is nice on the '85 but I think the '84 ran sweeter. MY $0.02
