87 300D, wont shut off. Brown line?

I had the day off today and decided to try to figure out why my W124 diesel wont shut off.

I traced a line that i found disconnected. Ive always read that the brown line is the line for the shut off. When i take the key out of the ignition the car gets quieter as if its trying to shut off but wont.

I also found what i believe is the shut off valve on the IP. The rubber connector that held the vacuum line to it had a hole and was brittle so i replaced it with one off the EGR valve. its highlighted red in this pic, but the car still wont shut off.

Ok so here is the line that i found disconnected.

I followed it, its highlighted in red.

And by pulling on it gently it led me to this line near the brake booster.

This is the line i assume goes to the ignition. But what does it plug into? i cant seem to find what it was connected to.

Help please!

Your symptoms when you turn off the key are just like mine when I have the brown line disconnected.

That sure looks like the right line, 99% sure on that. That looks like the shut off, 80% sure on that.

This picture and info:

makes me more like 99% sure on the shut off valve also.

My brown line usually gets knocked loose above the front left wheel well.

In the second picture your brown line goes into an orange line with what looks like clear glue on the end. What is that connected to?

It looks like it was ripped, im not sure what it connects to. Thats what im trying to figure out. I have the plastic shut off valve in the trunk that i bought at my work, i was going to try to change it if i couldnt figure out what the diconnected line went to.

So you were able to track it from the shut off valve up to the firewall, then it comes out from the firewall to the front fender. But you cannot see what it plugs into on the wheel well/fender right?

The big thing you need is where it connects on the wheel well?

Well i tried following it from the shut off valve but there isnt enough room in there to trace it.

If the line im holding in pic #2 is indeed the shut off line maybe ill pick up some vacuum line and a rubber connector at my work tomorrow and connect it straight to the shut off valve?

I took a look at mine. You have a broken thingamdoodle.

got a part number on that thingamdoodle?:D

Or maybe i can take the vacuum line that i diconnected from the EGR and use it to connect the two together?

greasybenz 12-05-2006 01:43 AM

So it connects to something below that big black line or does it connect to the big black line?

I wish I could send a photo of mine.

The Brown line runs up to that faded grey disc that is part of the black line. On the bottom of it there is a nipple. The one on yours is broken off. It is stuck in the end of the orange tubing. You need that line/part.

damn, well thanks for the help. Maybe someone else will chime in with a pic of where it connects to. I just need this fixed before i take it back into paint, i dont want to teach the paint guys how to shut off the car manually just for them to forget how and call me during work.

Follow the green arrows in the last post. You can see the two pieces of plastic that used to be one piece before they broke.

thanks, now to figure out how to connect them back together.

I had a similar problem, but still had a little bit of the nipple to plug the hose back into. I used duct tape to hold it all together, and it is working so far. But in your case, I'm pretty sure you just need to replace that grey plastic unit, and get a new hose as well to connect it to. I don't think it will be a difficult job, unless you end up breaking the larger black tube in the process. This is likely, since that tube is rather brittle looking. So you should be prepared for the possibility of replacing that as well.

Good luck!

Got it working again!! thanks for all the help! i love this forum.

So what i did was i put the line back into the nipple on the grey disc. And put some red silicone sealent around it to hold and seal(duh).

And now the car shuts off!
now its off to get the scuffed up paint fixed.....or maybe a repaint by my uncle:P just depends on what my insurance will cover:)

thanks again guys.
