IP leak on E300 TD
 

Now I got the curse! Woke up this morning to a puddle of diesel. Most fuel lines and O rings have been changed out over this last year except for the O rings for the delivery valves in the IP. Have a nice leak at the top of the IP after the coldest night so far....19deg. F and after running about 6 tanks of ULSD and blends of Biodiesel since October 15th.

Never had an IP leak on any of my diesels before...interesting! You know this new diesel fuel does not really smell.....so I was not sure which fluid it was at first.

Any recommendations on where to get the 32 toothed Splined Socket needed to remove the delivery valves and replace the O rings in there?

You are talking about your DSL? I didn't think the 616/7 had splined delivery valves except the Euros. I wonder if W123 folks are having trouble with delivery valve sealing rings after the arrival of ULSD. Better go check mine:)

Sorry Steve, I was refering to my current 98 E300 TD with the 606.962 engine. I don't remember if my past 84 300SD or 87 SDL hand splined fittings on the IP delivery nipples??

Your story sounds identical to my recent experience and the new delivery valve O-rings solved it.

I bought my splined socket at zdmak.com although I've seen them on eBay by private sellers for less $.

I thought at first you were talking about a TD as in wagon, and I promptly got excited to hear there was newer than 87 TDs available in the US.

I'm now pretty sure you're talking about TD as in TurboDiesel :cry:

Thanks Scott, I'll check the zdmak.com site out first before I go to the MB Dealer. Too bad you just can't rent one...how many times do you really need a 32 toothed splined socket??:confused:

I'm not using mine at the moment - how about $5 rental fee to cover shipping to you + a $40 refundable deposit which is refunded when you mail it back to me in good condition? I live in Methuen which is about 30 mi. north of Boston so USPS shipping anywhere in Mass. should be cheap.

I dont envy you "606" guys, the seals on the 616/7 are a piece of cake. I think I read about delivery seals leaking after using USLD, on the cummins forum.

My condolences on your leaks, but such is the way of this new fuel...it seems everyone is getting them now. I did mine Monday and all is well again...did all the lines too and the o-ring for the shutoff while I was in there, I just don't want to deal with it again for a long time.

Here is a laugh! I contacted the local MB dealer parts/service department to see if they had the socket to either rent, loan or buy. I explained to them I just needed it to change the O rings in IP delivery valves..they said they had to call me back. When I returned from an appointment there was a lengthy message from the parts department saying that they would not recommend me doing it...they don't even change the O rings themselves....something to the effect that something internal could happen??? They have been sending the leaky IPs to an Injector pump company in Rhode Island.

What a bunch of morons! They are just trying to milk this leak problem for all its worth!

They count on the cluelessness of the average MB owner not ever questioning them on this. They turn $6 worth of parts into a $3800 job...no kidding, that is what one of the board members on the MBCA board was quoted by his dealer to fix the leaky seals...$3800. They claimed the pump cannot be repaired but must be replaced.

I can't tell you how many times parts people have told me that the o-rings and copper washers were not available because they never bothered to find the right page on the EPC that shows them. Maybe your dealer also is working from the wrong page and doesn't even know that MB sells the parts.

At least your dealer said it can be repaired...still I am sure their bill would be well into the 4 digits. They are probably afraid of getting crap into the pump, you do have to clean it off several times before you bust open the delivery valves to make sure no crud gets in there but really that is the only risk to doing this job.

My dealer got me the socket in 1-2 days...I recall it being under $40. If you want the part number you can order it from that. It is PN 617 589 01 09 00.

I don't even let my dealer look up the parts anymore, I just look them up myself on the EPC, call the parts department directly and they order whatever I need and call me when it comes in, usually within 1-2 days.

Yes, the o-rings are A 017 997 41 48 and the copper washers are A 004 997 45 40. You'll (of course) need 6 of each though the copper washers are not necessary for the job I did them anyway just to be safe. Add to your shopping list an intake manifold gasket (A 606 141 01 80) as well as the o-ring seal for between the EGR valve and the air line (A 606 997 06 45). All of them should run you about $25-30.
