I used to have a diesel Golf. One morning I was driving to work with the rear defogger on and the damn thing shattered on me. Sounded like a shotgun went off in the trunk. I damn near crashed from the panic. This is why you want to get those elements fixed when they develop a break. The windscreen heats unevenly and then shatters spectacularly.

On topic, I keep a pitcher on my front porch and use cold water from the spigot to defrost. It works just fine. Have the wipers going and it gets wiped off before it can freeze.
