New, cleaner diesel engines, running on low-sulfur fuel, produce far less soot than old versions.
Does that mean when you fill up an 80's diesel, you use high-sulfur fuel?

Now I'm really curious how much it costs to refill a tank of urea? It just sounds expensive.

Hate to say it, but Honda may leapfrog MB and the rest of the Germans in diesel tech...

http://www.iht.com/articles/2006/05/28/bloomberg/sxhonda.php

So it's either a kilowatt of power or keeping your urea tanks topped up...

(and note this Honda ad, what a trip...)

... exhaust flows through a plasma reactor
Kickass, nothing like having a plasma reactor onboard. Except maybe a tank of highly pressurized hydrogen.

1 kW plasma isn't so bad. I just wonder if the urea system backpressure reduces power as much as scraping 1kw off the alternator?

One Horsepower equals 746 watts so one Kilowatt equals 1.34 horsepower.

I don't think it's too much of a stretch...

Yep, one kW is would require about 83 amps at 12V, so it could be done with a large alternator.

That's assuming 100% efficiency between the engine and output of the alternator. I bet it'll be quite a bit higher than 1.34hp, but still not enough to really worry about too much.

Now that Odyssey sounds really interesting...my parents will be in the market for a van to haul the dogs around in a few years. The engine in the 240DL is starting to show its age, and face it, there aren't any wagons around these days that have the cargo capacity of the old Volvo 240 wagon.

The E320 bluetec has 20hp less than the 320 R,GL, and ML.

From a Google search on "Alternator Efficiency":

Bosch Unveils High-Efficiency Alternator
Jun 7, 2004 12:00 PM
Robert Bosch Corp. has released its Ultra Premium Long Haul Alternator for commercial vehicles. The company states the alternator, which operates at 70% efficiency, provides greater electrical power and efficiency at road speed or at idle than conventional original equipment replacement alternators that typically operate at 55% efficiency.

Oooooh...1.91hp(@70%) and gasp,2.44hp(@55%)...I merely stated the unit energy equivalents. The only inference I made was the hp loss was miniscule in looking at the "Big Picture."
