They can get a little "squerley" that way with the engine weight that far aft. Making sure the front tires are well inflated (34lbs) helps.

personally, i will never use a dolly again. a trailer is just so much more conventient and safe.

be sure to tie her down well though!

I can't remember where I read it but I was reading a lot on this topic earlier in the year when I was trying to figure out what to tow behind my motorhome. I ended up getting a 4wd Suzuki Sidekick but I was considering a manual transmission 123 until I came across the info.
this is exactly what happened, mine is a manual and since he drove from florida to texas the bearing didnt get lubed, whats that bearing called? cause maybe i can replace mine.. heh but mines ground in 4th for 10 plus years, and the trans is still really good i guess

I've pulled several 4-speeds and a 5-speed w/back wheels on the ground for 200+ miles and had no problems with the gearboxes. If you look at a cross section of the transmission the gearing in the rear of the case will splash plenty of lubricant when being turned by the driveshaft.

I suspect that the failure mentioned above was brought on by a low lubricant level or some other non-towing related issue.
AND no, you should see the recoreds this guy gave me. 2500 mile oil changes, trans fluid changed religiously. car drove fine in all gears before tow, after tow, 4th gear scratches now. i thought it was a syncro, but its wierd for a 4th gear syncro to go before a ast or 2nd gear.

I towed my 240 auto with the rear wheels on the dolly for 800miles and it towed just fine. AND it was towed behind a 28ft motorhome for those miles.

I'd say that towing a manual trans with the drive wheels down is "At your own RISK".

I think honestly its up to you . Their are good and bads to it. SOme people have had problems, and other havnt. Its really up to you. If you want to be super safe, i would suggest a car trailer, not a tow dolly.

On a 4 speed tranny the counter shaft is in constant engagement with the input shaft which only turns when the engine is on and clutch is released. The counter shaft is what sits in oil and slings it around. In neutral on a tow dolly I would disconnect the driveshaft for a long tow because the bearing between the output shaft and the main shaft would have no way of getting oil.

Thumbs up

I'll spend the extra $30 or whatever for a full flat trailer.

I guess the reason that happened to yours is because the clutching hubs for all 4 gears spin with the main shaft. The syscros ride on them and would recieve no lubrication. You would have a brass syncro ring in slight contact with steel and no oil.

anybody got a pdf or other image of this? I would like to see a breakout of the tranny and see if I agree with the problem... I never heard before this of a manual tranny problem in N with a tow.
...
