Now that is a pictorial I have been waiting for. Do you have to pound the pickle fork with the mini sledge?
Project 240D has a very clean and un-drippy tranny pan btw.........

I found a neat little tool at the Napa parts shop in my area that let me take ball joints and tie rod ends apart without ruining the boot with a pickle fork, and with a lot less beating than the fork required as well.
I'm sure there are other sources, but on the napa site, it's part # SER3916 http://napaonline.com//MasterPages/NOLMaster.aspx?PageId=470&LineCode=SER&PartNumber=3916&Description=Ball+Joint+Separator

I did the outer tie rod end on the 79 240D, and it was a breeze. If you aren't concerned with destroying the old boot the pickle fork takes about 4 decent whacks with a ball peen hammer (12 oz is what I had handy) and it came right off. Counted the number of turns coming off and installed the new one with same number of turns. When I get around to driving it more, I will have it aligned. Its pretty close right now.

as a young man, I worked in a front end shop in the early 80's and my boss would strangle me to death if I brought a pickle fork into the shop.
he always loosened the tie rod nut a good 1/4" down, then whacked the side of the tie receiver. the rods almost always popped out on the first whack. I've been doing it that way my whole life. tie rods, ball joints. everything. of course, I have never done it on a MB... John

I just got done doing upper and lower left front ball joints, and they aren't so bad, as long as you have access to the MB ball joint tool to press the bottom one back in!
That being said, I fought with it for half of a week before finding a local indy that still worked on older MB's, and had the tool. Having finally found them, they were nice enough to press the joint into the spindle for free.

Two questions...
1) Does this apply to the 300D as well?
2) Can anyone recommend a good basic tutorial for the steering and suspension elements? It's a huge gap in my automotive knowledge. I need the basics, with lots of pretty pictures... "This is a tie rod. This is an upper control arm..." Ideally it would include pictures of good and damaged items for comparison. Thanks DeiselGiant for putting this tie rod tutorial together!
