SCORED!!!! Low $$$ Motor Oil

I went to Meijer to pick up a single quart of motor oil to keep in the trunk (I used the last one up.) Mobil Delvac 1300 15w40 was $10 for a 2.5 gallon container. Needless to say, I bought all two of them. My hands were full, so I couldn't carry a single quart. Is it sacreligious to put Mobil oil into a Castro container?

Cliff Note: Man buys motor oil for $1 a quart, and is happy.

For the 5w40 synthetic turbo diesel oil? I pay $134 for a box with four one-gallon jugs in it. I get it directly from an oil distributor here, not available anywhere else, pretty annoying. Not that much more expensive than you're getting it for though. My price includes 6% tax too. Its about $126 before tax. So about $31.50 a gallon. oh well.

Yep, I haven't found it below $6.99 per quart yet. Maybe if/when it gets back into Walmart?

child's play i pay $127.50 for 15 liters - LINK of full synthetic MB229.5 ELF Ful Tech 0w-30 [specs | web] . i will be regularly lab testing so we'll see if the UOA results justify this expense...

I wouldn't run 0W30 in a 616 or 617. As I recall, the manual only allows xW30 oils up to about 75F ambient conditions. I don't use anything lighter than 5W40, but some folks like 0W40. I'm sure ELF is good oil, but it doesn't seen to have many specific diesel specs (it's only CF and 229.5 rated). Wouldn't be my first choice.

the service manual does indicate XXw-30 oils can be used up to 77F. FWIW - ELF Full Tech is as heavy as a 30 weight can get, in fact my baseline UOA (only 160 miles on oil) came back with a V@100C of 12.5 - the 40 weight V@100C range is 12.5 to 16.2. also the HTHS viscosity is over 3.5 which means at operating temps it's film thickness is on par with many 40 weights.

regardless, if subsequent UOAs show high wear i will take your recommendation and pull the oil in favor of a 5w-40 full synthetic. i'm not going to be surprised if Full Tech returns low metal numbers though...

cheers!

hey sunrg, i didnt know you were on this forum! and ouch! on that price for the 0w30. My work just started carrying ELF oils and so far we have the 5w30 thats rated 505.01 and a 5w40 thats 505.00.

Im planning on using the 5w40 at the next change of the 300SD. But my 87 is sticking to mobil 1 fluids only.

i wouldn't be surprised if the ELF Excellium LDX 5w-40 MB 229.3 (the 505.00 you're carrying) performs at the level or better than M1 anything. i'm still UOA testing this oil in a 85300Dturbo i sold to my buddy. here's the UOA from it. the first (bottom) UOA was the oil that was in the car when purchased, the second (top) is the ELF and that oil is still in and will be run to 6000 miles at least:

since you have access, if it were my MBs i'd do some UOAs to see which oil performs best and then stick with it - M1, ELF, or whatever.

cheers!

well once the next oil change comes up ill do a UOA on the mobil 1 5w40. Then run ELF 5w40 and compare the two.

Has anybody compared the Rotella 5W-40 to the Mobil 5W-40? Only the Rotella is available near me.

I got all of you beat-Chevron Delo SAE 30 from the local Autozone for 99 cents/GALLON!-I got 2 gallons from 1 store for 1 cent each!! Rated CH-4, has been starting OK down to around 20 F., will have to plug in or put in the Delvac 1 soon, though. The syn Rotella is a Group III, the Delvac 1/Truck & SUV/Turbo Diesel Truck is a superior group IV full synthetic-if you have a 616/617, the soot loads up so fast it probably makes no difference anyway (unless you have bypass oil filtration to remove the soot).

229.5 compliant

Hmmmm. I just dumped this uber-oel into the diesel last night; my 1st oil change on this car. I've had exceptional (documented via UOA) results with it in the gasser, I figured it's gonna be a home run in the diesel. We'll see at next interval.

BTW, I drained out (a lot) Delvac 1 and pulled a sample for UOA so I'll be able to get some sort of comparison at next drain interval.
