Blunders, 1977 300D
1. Drove away with block heater, battery warmer and lube oil heater all plugged in was a long extention cord so got pretty far down the road before heard ZAP.
2. Lowered my hydralic jack with fully removing the jack stand went right through rocker panel 3. Drove 200 miles with the lube oil fill cap off, some how it was right where I left it but the hood pad was a mess as well as rest of engine only dropped about 1/2 pint or so. 4. Some others but I foreget. Best way I have found to turn engine is use the main crankshaft pulley inside there is a 27MM (?) bolt. Turn clock wise and always remove when done. Regards Tom Scordato |

Brake light on the dash came on in my 82 300TD at around the same time I noticed my rear brake light blew out real bad. I thought hhmmm maybe it did something to the electronics in the dash. Well I've been really busy selling school buses for the past few monthes and I drove with the light on for around 6 weeks. Was looking at the schematics the other day as I'm starting to work on the car and noticed that the emergency brake puts the light on, hmmm must be a flaky switch, nope brake is 1/2 way down. Drive down road, put car in Neutral and apply emergency brake, nada. all gone.

Dodged that bullet....
Was replacing the turbocharger in the 83 300D because it had gone bad. Got everything in place and Started the car. Oil GUSHED out. Turned out that I had caused a stress fracture in the turbo oil supply line from the oil filter to the top of the turbo. Repaired the break by cutting the tube and covering with some high pressure (although rubber) fuel line. Worked really well. Meant to replace it, but it seemed to be going well. Drove the car about 10000 miles with that repair. When my mechanic heard about it, he had a baby. That tube is under very high pressure, and was basically a bomb waiting to go off, draining the engine of oil in seconds. Given that I used the car for some long distance in the desert in the summer driving, I could have easily been stranded in the middle of nowhere in extreme summer heat.

Slightly related confession: once upon coming home in my 82 300d I was distracted from my usual shutoff routine, leaned over to look for something I'd dropped on the floor and took my foot off the brake before putting it in park. Something suddenly felt "not quite right" then BANG, rammed the rear end of my 58 Studebaker, which was in neutral, sending it rolling into the back side of the garage into the shelf where I have all my expensive tools.
Leaving me sitting in the car thinking, "I have just been severely punished for being a dumbass." Sometimes you get lucky, nothing was damaged.
