Valve Adjustment
I have a 1989 Mercedes 190D,2.5 liter non turbo,I was told it has hydralic lifters and the valves are self adjusting, car has 290,000KM and it sounds like the valves are "ticking" but not all the time. Are the valves self adjusting?should I have it looked at by an other mechanic?

They are self adjusting hydraulic. Sometimes synthetic oil helps the ticking and sometimes it takes a couple of thousand miles to hear the difference. Make sure the tension shock dampner and belts and pulley are in good shape. They definately can cause unwanted noise if they are not up to snuff.
Also on next oil change make sure the o-rings on the shaft that goes all the way down into the filter are good or just replace them. Sometimes that gives better oil pressure to the top of the motor.
