Question Sunroof Wind Deflector

Folks,

I have looked around here for information relating to replacing the springs that cause the wind deflector to pop up upon opening......I could use an exploded diagram......I think I see where the springs might be.....am following the instructions (destructions) in the MB W123 Chassis and Body Manual...77-250; Removal and Installation of Sunroof Wind Deflector.....

Do the Left and Right Slide rails need to be removed??

Did a search.....did not find any writeup on this repair.....

Thanx,
SB

Finished the job....

Howdy All,

I just finished up the job.....got an exploded view from Phil....although it didn't help a whole bunch......

Sunroof Wind Deflector-sun-roof-snap-01.gif

....Phil was happy to supply me with this view of the Sunroof and Wind Deflector......what a guy!!!!!

I'll write up a breif description of the job.....and I took some photos, the thing that took me the longest was figuring out how the new style Spring Clips work......

The hardest part of this is getting the pictures and stuff to an acceptable size.......

The second hardest part was figuring out exactly how to assemble the new springs and clips .......

I'll do my best, but I am neither a professional photographer nor a computer whiz.....

Wind Deflector Spring Replacement #1

Gentlefolks,

Those of you who have MB Service Manuals or the MB Service Manual Library on CD.........open "Chassis and Body Manual" to Main Function Group 77 (Sliding Roof); Sub Function Group 250 (Removal and Installation of Sun Roof Wind Deflector).......

The rest, just try to follow what I type here, and I have ripped some of the pictures from MB W123 Chassis and Body Manual, 77-250....

Note this probably relates to W124 and W126 chassis...but I am unsure!!

1) Open Sunroof

2) Remove chrome plated rail at front of opening.....Note: I was a bit leery because I did not want to have later problems with the headliner....not a problem !!

Wind Deflector Chrome Plated Rail.doc

3) Remove left and right sliding rails....Note: relating to my first post in this thread....Yes they do have to come off !!

Wind Deflector Sliding Rail.doc

4) Unclip rear holder and pull it back out of wind deflector......
Note 1: This is the little rail that operates the wind deflector.
Note 2: Unclip means pull up on rear end of holder.
Note 3: These are Left and Right, but look very much alike.
Note 4: As you unclip look at the position of the plastic piece in the rail....it can be flipped over.....and the metal fingers that project up from the car fit into the slots in the plastic piece.

Wind Deflector Rear Holder.doc

5) Use hand to first pull out wind deflector at center....
Note: The deflector is flexible, let it rest atop the clip/hinge

6) Press down wind deflector and at same time use a screwdriver to press the left then the right holder out of the recess, carefully.
Note: The holder is the little clip/hinge device

Wind Deflector Pivot.doc

7) Remove wind deflector toward rear of car
Note: The wind deflector assembly is a tad longer than the width of the sunroof opening, needs to be angled a bit...remember this for reassembly later!

To be continued..........SB

Note: each of the .doc files attached here are actually the photos from the MB W123 Chassis and Body Manual....as I said before I am far from a computer guru, this was the easiest way for me to copy them from the CD.

Wind Deflector Spring Replacement #2

OK Folks,

Now that you have your wind deflector in hand.......

This is the time to clean up inside and under the deflector....shop vac...etc.

Also clean out drain holes if necessary....someone else suggests using "Weed Whacker" line in another thread.....mine were clear...

Your original springs will be attached to the deflector shaft via a little spring tab fitting into a notch in the end of the shaft.....

Sunroof Wind Deflector-mvc-336l.jpg

....kinda hard to see from the condition of my old spring !

Your new springs will have a tab that sticks out rather than tucking inward. The springs are ....
Left PN 124 782 05 35
Right PN 124 782 06 35
The new style spring retainer clips have little holes drilled into them to accept the smaller portruding tab....slide this tab/tail into the little hole so as the hole in the clip alligns with the center of the spring.
The retainer clips are....
Spring Retainer Clip PN 124 782 00 46 (they come in a package of 2)

Slide the assembled spring and clip onto the deflector's shaft....

Sunroof Wind Deflector-wind-deflector-spring-new-.jpg

Repeat for other side....

At this point I cleaned and polished all of the chrome pieces that I had removed....

Reassembly......
8) MB says "Insert wind deflector into opening and knock in left and right holders with a slight knock from the palm of the hand. Make sure that center holder engages properly.

OK....now look at the next photo.....note highlighted hole....

Sunroof Wind Deflector-wd-spring-end-hole.jpg

The spring end goes into this hole.....see next photo....

Sunroof Wind Deflector-wd-new-spring-hole.jpg

...you can see the spring end inserted into hole......highlighted the spring retainer clip end....

9) Secure left and right holders and clips

10) Install chrome plated rail at front of opening as well as left and right sliding rails.
Note: I lubed my sunroof at this point...before installing the sliding rails.

Note: Pay attention when fitting the holders, at the rear end...where it slips over a pait of fingers/tabs that project up from car....the little plastic piece's flat side goes down....

Test......should work nicely.....SB

Wind Deflector Adjustment

Now, if you aren't entirely happy with the operation of your sunroof....

11) If the wind deflector scrapes in the sunroof opening when running out or in, the height can be corrected with the adjusting screw accordingly.

Wind Deflector Adjustment.doc

...there is a small screw in the holder that adjusts the angle of the forked end, thus changing the angle of the fork that operated the wind deflector.

MB Note: "If wind deflector rattles at center holder, the deflector is held by a second person at the outer holders, while it is pulled out in the center area of the center holder, and bent up a little. This amount of pre-load will prevent rattling.".....quoted from 77-250

Comments from me......this repair was not difficult, it took me a little while to decide how the new style springs and retainer/clips went together.....time involved was a couple of hours, including phoning Phil to request an exploded view (seen above) from his parts catalog, retreiving the e-mail from Phil, and cleaning and polishing everything, and lubing the sunroof rails.

When you head out, why not drive up to Maine "on your way?" and demonstrate this fix to me. My 123 sunroof isn't flush anymore, the deflector don't pop, life is sad.
Or you could consider becoming an itinerant 123 sunroof repairman, kind of like the tinker of yore, travelling the country, fixing sunroofs on old Mercedes while their families stand around, awestruck at your skill.
Well, it's an idea. Until then, I'm also looking forward to the description and pictures.
