are the W123 and W116 5cyl diesel trans the same?

I bought a W123 Haynes manual for my 82 300SD only because Haynes apparently doesn't make a manual for the 116 body diesels.

The parts computer at Autozone says the 300sd trans take 6.5 quarts of fluid. The W123 manual says the same for the 123 trans. So I put that amount in and the dip stick now says it is way over filled. The level of the fluid is above the bend in the bottom of the dip stick.

Will this hurt the trans? The car shifts normally.

The fluid level should be in-between the two bends. I am assuming you changed the tranny fluid? If you only drained the pan it will only need about 4 qts, if you drain the whole thing (including torque converter) then it will need the 6.5 qts

The transmissions are not the same, whether that affects the fluid level I don't know.

The w116 has a 722.1 transmission whereas the w123's generally have the 722.3.

Thought 116s had a four bolt trans pan...

Your 92 300SD is not a w116; it is a W126 chasis

No, I didn't drain the torque converter; didn't even think about it. I not even sure how to drain the converter. I did remove the pan and replaced the filter and gasket though. So I guess it's too full. Will that hurt? should I drain some out?

Yes by all means, drain it. You'll blow the seals drivin around with that much fluid.

My error in typing.
The first post said it was a '82 300SD. That makes it a 126 not a 116.
Sorry for the '92 confusion
