Need Cylinder head!
I am looking for a used or new cylinder head P/N 603 010 96 20 for a 93 300SD. According to my books, the head fits all from 90-95 S-Class cars.

That's the part number - when you call salvage yards, you'll want to verify the casting number (what's actually visible on the head). The casting number you want is 603-016-xx-01, where "xx" is 17, 18, 20, or 22. If you order a new head (spare part number 603-010-96-20), you will get casting number 603-016-22-01, which is the latest & greatest design.
Anyway, these are getting very hard to locate used... you may have to buy new. Rusty (800-741-5252) should be able to get you a new one for about $1600. |

It looks like Duval has them for $1,500 although occasionally the price on the website gets revised after ordering. Shipping from Duval might be pretty steep though.

Duval charges 10% shipping, so a $1500 part will be $1650 shipped. Probably about equal to Rusty, although I haven't called either to confirm current pricing.

Dan, just curious, why do you need cylinder head? What diagnoses did you use to isolate the head? Thanks.

Just a wild guess, but I bet he needs it to replace a cracked #14 head on a 1986/1987 model. The #17-up heads are reinforced to resist cracking. This is a very common problem on the #14 heads. Both my '87's had cracked heads. Early symptom is high pressure in the cooling system when cold... symptoms can get worse from there on out if you don't fix it.
Head failures on the 1990-up (#17 or newer) heads is pretty rare. |

Hey gasxr, I hate to hijack a thread, but..... would you mind taking a look at my post here and give me your opinion? I love reading your input and was psyched to see you online. Actually, my botom line question is related to this post, which is "Do I need a complete rebuild, or will a head do my job?" Obviously, a rebuild or a good used engine may be more desirable, but money, time, etc., yuck. I could probably do a head replacement myself. Thanks in advance.....
