Newbie here I have a question for you!

Hey there everyone, I just recently got the chance to purchase a 1979 300sd, it runs just doesn't hold a charge overnight, the main flaw is cosmetic, but the engine is fine, I have never had a Diesel before, but I am up for the challenge (I hope), anyhow what would be a good price for that car? Anyone know how long a full tank of diesel last? Hope to hear some imput soon!
Thanks

Not holding a charge overnight usually means either a battery dying, alt not charging fully, or something is not either not turned of, or shutting off, like the glow plug circuit, lights, etc.

Difficult to guesstimate value since mileage and pics not posted. Also having all service records would be a plus. You need to check everything like locks, climate control, windows, suspension, etc. It is a good idea to gete pre purchase inspection from someone who knows these older cars well.

Fuel mileage varies, but is usally much better than a comparable weight/size gasser. I would think lower to mid 20's, but there are people that have the 80-85 SD's getting mid to upper 20's.

that model is really sought after in perfect shape. big worries are rust. the thing really needs to be garaged it's entire life. pricing can be anywhere from 500.00 as a rust bucket to over 20K in perfect shape.
average around 5K

Thanks, I live in the southwest so Rust is usually not a problem, I do plan to do some minor restorations as I dont have BIG bucks to go all out yet, just wondering if it was a good model to do it on, I love these old MB and can't wait to finally get my hands on it, I dont know the milage yet, it's an automatic, it is currently being driven by a college student, who is going back home and no longer needs it. once again thanks for the posts

rust is a big problem with that car. so be sure you really inspect it well all around the frame, and the jack points and the doors and fenders. it's nearly 30 years old, it may not have come originally from tthe southwest.
REALLY look it over well for rust or signs of bondo.

Yep. Use a magnet to help you.

The W116 body cars are very nice.

This year 300SD has the dreaded Climate Control Servo and is noted as a PITA. It can be a source of trouble for discharging the battery. The servo motor is supposed to search for "home" position when you shut the engine down. Home position removes power to the servo motor;if it does not find home position there will be current draw from the battery. The servo is big bucks. Good luck Willie (Poor Soul)

Seriously, I heard those cars were made before MB decided to do something about corrosion. Every one I have ever seen had rust, including the Southern cars. In the window seal channels, in fenderwells, on rockers and rear trailing arms, hinge pivots, front frame members, etc. etc.
W116s also end up with ugly, deflated, and collapsed rear seats.
However they are better than w123s as far as drivers' cars go and I would be thoroughly delighted to find one in nice shape, i.e. no rust. I could deal with any other issue but rust. The interior layout is very nice. Really beautiful cars.
Scrutinize the vehicle with a magnifying glass for rust. Look everywhere.

I have one, and as said in another post someone drove into my fender and headlight. the car has a bad paintjob, an engine with a bad cylinder, the interior is soso with a rear seat of a 300 cd because of the horsehair problem and still I want to keep it. they drive amazingly nice, handling is superb. and it has the old looks, considering the 116 dates from the early seventies. and then it's got the 5 cylinder turbo engine! I'd go for it, even rusted. just have it for a while and enjoy man. depending on how bad the rust is you can decide to put money into it. the servo can be bypassed by removing the whole unit and putting in a cheap inline valve to control waterflow to the heatercoil. very manual control!
goodluck
henry.
