Yes a recall but worded craftily as "supplemental document". I can't post a picture of what the piece of paper looks like. I am at work right now. I will post a pic later if anyone wants to PM me. I do not know how to post a pic but I'll figure it out.
I think it is plain luck, don't know which years are affected but the trap is still made out of ceramic and that is why it doesn't last. MBZ recommended it be replaced at 30,000 mile intervals meaning every 30,000? And that was my question to the service rep that led up to a free replacement!! The rest of the story is just a I first wrote. I didn't expect to get a turbo out of it but if the trap oxidizer is messed up enough, then the turbo will be damaged too. I guess my trap was pretty messed up. I asked the guy why MBZ can't make the trap out of something stronger than ceramic and he replied that they stick to the technology of that model 300D's time. That doesn't make financial sense to me but MBZ does OK without my advice. Now everyone, go to your Mercedes glove box and see if Santa left something good for you! It is a small, light blue paper that is folded. Post if you found a surprise! If you have a '85 300D turbo, you might get lucky too! Frankie

Quote:
The trap ox replacement is an updated part. Not the original design. If MB had to replace traps and/or turbos every 30k miles it would be a huge recall cost burden to them, which is why the replacement part is a redesigned updated part and thusly trap ox replacement is only needed once. Furthermore, traps were only implemented on California cars. Those of us with Federalized emissions don't have the trap problem. I don't know why you're getting a second replacement, there is a screwup somewhere. Whoever told you 'they stick to the technology of that model 300D's time' needs to put down the crackpipe. That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. MB has updated parts for their cars repeatedly over the years. I think your dealer just wants to get paid big dollars by MB for a simple albeit expensive procedure. Something fishy is going on, or that piece of paper you found in your glovebox is for some other car.

Thanks for letting me in on your suspicions d Delano. Like I said, I did ask the service rep why MBZ didn't improve the traps construction and that was the answer I got from him.
I am at home now and I'm looking right at this Maintenance booklet supplement. It does say Model year 1985 and yes, California version with trap oxidizer. The words intervals (or until further notice) and replacements are written in plural. My trap was replaced in 1994 but the rep told me that I need another. It does sound too good to be true, believe me I know, but I swear, I don't have a crackpipe! That's it, dude. Stay tuned for Monday. Frankie
