Oil in air cleaner - cleaning the air cleaner and is my turbo in danger?

hey all,

While im waiting on parts for other repairs I took apart my air cleaner tonight. It has a lot of oil in it and has for some time (from PO). On the passenger side there's been enough to pool up and drip out one of the bolt holes all over the engine.

-i have some blow by, but I pass the tea-kettle dance test just fine
-PO updated breather hose within last hundred miles. may already be helping.
-I found that 2 of 3 rubber mounts were loose or broken, I will replace these ASAP.
- my vacuum pump seems to be ok, it creates the right vacuum, haven't seen oil in the vac system

Is it ok to throw the entre air cleaner assembly in a bath of water and degreaser (so I can get a sense of how much oil I'm getting in there now)? How about the turbo u-tube? (which also has some oil in it)

Any other suggestions on stuff to try or check? If it has been this way for a while and there is oil in the u-tube to the turbo. is the turbo in jeopardy? honestly i dont know if its working at this point...havent driven the car enough yet to know.

As always, any help greatly appreciated...
dd

Degreasing should be ok. As should your turbo. Don't worry about it.

sounds good...will degrease tonight. i need to reinstall it anyways to check another repair.

will the rattling of the air cleaner cause oil not to drain down back to the oil pan correctly? that seems like it could be the case.

Yes, rattling could be part of the problem.
Check these:
Filter housing mounts, the rubber deteriates and the mounts crack.
o-rings on bottom of oil separator, where it connects to the drain tube.
Run oil flush through the drain tube at the next oil change.
Most of mine was coming from the top of the separator. Bend the tabs back, remove the center piece and apply a bead of silicone around the edge where the insert sits. (Be sure the silicone is completely dry and there are no stray small bits of silicone before running.)

Oil separator function

Should the cap on the oil separator (the one held down by the tabs) be completely held down?? My flips up during use and this is where my oil leaking really seems to be coming from.

Ill try tightening the tabs first if they should be tight.

Ill try this next. Think high temp oil resistant RTV would be good as well here?

ive used the copper RTV to seal a crush washer that had a nick in it and its doing fine.. should be alright with the oil...

just make sure you dont put alot on where it drips down and could possibly break off and cause issues

The solutions (hopefully)...

Last night I took the air cleaner apart on the bench. Discovered the 'tabs' that hold the air separator down were loose, allowing the plastic cap to rock around freely. After reading here and observing junkyard examples, I pounded down the tabs with a brass hammer, sealing the cap shut. I wanted to leave using RTV as a last resort. It looks very tight now - its not going anywhere. This will singlehandedly make a big difference Im sure.

The grommet between the oil separator and the drain tube back to the oil pan was missing. Ordered from fastlane: PN#:006 997 2645 for those keeping score at home. Will replace turbo u-boot seals while I am at it.

So now, idle shaking is under control, and the parts internal to the air cleaner are working right. Looks like the situation is under control.

Thanks for all of the help!
