What?...............

Are you talking about the flex pipe that is part of the EGR system? If this is so, then you also need to better describe what you mean by "vent" ! Regards, |

There is a Flex pipe that is at the front of the exhaust system, just as you reach the manifold. Also, there is a vent on the transmission. I believe that the exhaust that is escaping from the broken exhaust( And believe me there is alot) is going directly into that vent.

possibly, but how would it enter into the tranny?

I'm really skeptical that exhaust soot can get into a tranny vent!
BenzForLife - I too am skeptical about the possibility of exhaust soot entering a tranny vent in sufficient quantity to cause the fluid to blacken.
Adrenelin500 - The more I have thought about this since you first reported it, the more I think the likely culprit is rubber deteriorating on the inner surfaces of the two flexible transmission fluid cooling/heating lines that run between the tranny and the radiator... these are probably the cause of your black tranny fluid contamination. When were these flexlines last replaced? Are they leaking? Didn't you just service the tranny fluid? Bud didn't you say you did NOT properly drain the high volume torq converter? What do you think BenzForLife... and anyone else out there? An exhaust leak contaminating the tranny fluid would have to be just about perfectly positioned and I don't see where that could be on this model/year MBZ. Regards, Last edited by Samuel M. There is a constant presence of exhaust in my car , as in it's bothering my eyes and throat even if I don't have the heat on. If I do turn the heat on it's unbearable ...especially while stopped at a light. I have to clean the inside of my window at least once a week and the amount of soot on there would blow your mind. That being said. How much exhaust is lingering under the hood. You also have to realize I drive about 200 km's in stop and go traffic each and every day monday to friday and some saturdays. With That much driving and that much exhaust don't you think it's a pretty good posibility. I ran this theory by a parts guy and a mechanic yesterday and both seemed to think the idea was a good possibility. I'm just posting on here in case someone else runs into this problem, assuming it's the real reason for my troubles. I'm going to have the flex pipe fixed and the trannys filter and fluid changed . I'll get back with the results.

MrSafety says... let's fix the exhaust problem FIRST !
Quote:
Taking a look at the various “systems” and components in/near the engine compartment that carry exhaust for your car I see: (1) a cheap “seal ring” between the front header pipe and the center muffler… this is a possibility, (2) and there is the “manifold gasket” of course [~$10] but much labor, (3) and around the turbo there is the “Turbo Mount Gasket [ ~$35 in a kit] plus much labor, and on the EGR system: (4) there is a cheap “ EGR gasket ” [~$2-$5 ], and (5) a “ corrugated EGR tube ” [~$65 ]. Yes, most likely it's only (5) above and the adjacent gasket [(4)] but you should check around for other leaks! As I said, the soot should allow you to inspect and easily find the leak… but you can always do your inspection while the engine is running which helps! THIS IS SAFETY… let’s solve this problem FIRST! Regards, |
