It's hard to find the key and cylinder in junkyards. If you got to the dealer they will sell you the ignition cylinder and key based on your vin- you must bring proof of ownership to do this. It's one of the few things that does not cost an arm and a leg there.

You're going to have to visit the dealer if you want the cylinder to match your existing key.

If you can manage to get the broken piece out of the cylinder, you'll save a lot of misery on that job.

Just checked last week. $103 bucks plus tax. You decide if that is arm and leg territory......
Mine on the Duck is very notchy and often won't turn w/out wiggling for awhile. I'm on borrowed time.......
(Key cylinder was different on my '77 than the '80 and '81. No hole for paper clip and different front cover)

It's more than just the wiring, as you have vacuum to deal with also.....

**I would also suggest any "hotwiring" answers be done via private message, as I don't guess we really want to brodcast how to steal our cars....**

Click the buy parts tab on top of the page. It won't match but it will be a new lock. Do not wait until you cannot turn it, because then you need to pull the entire steering wheel plus the colume out.

If you want it to match your door locks you need to order one from the dealer, they will probably charge you a few hundred to install.

They are cheap for the early W126's, once they went to the alarm the cost $250ish.

if you can't move the key, you can't remove the cylinder.
it has to be in position 1 to access the hole that removes the cylinder.
if it won't turn, you need to follow dieselgiant.com diy on ignition lock removal. and I am not sure his pictorial will work for an SD.

You're in for a heckuva time with this one. Byrdandcompany and I just did this about three weeks ago on his 1980 300SD. I am a maintenance technician and I work on VERY expensive metalworking machinery for a living (I could buy several McLaren SLR's for the price of the Mazak Machining Centers we have), and I am telling you it ain't easy if you can't turn the cylinder to the dismount notch or notches (depending on year model) and it took me a few hours to do it carefully. A good shop will probably want $500 to do it, beware of anyone who offers to do it for cheap because they probably have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA what they are doing. You can pull the instrument panel out and "hotwire" the starter, but you cannot turn the steering wheel. The steering lock that is integrated into the ignition assembly is a work of art by itself - it probably cost as much to manufacture as some small cars of its day.

You are in for a heck of a time with that one. If you could turn it somehow its pretty easy to get out. If not I'm not even sure how you would get it out, I suspect you have to pull the whole steering colume and figure it out from there.
