Question #2: lock problems on both cars
I've got an '87 300D Turbo sedan and an '85 300TD wagon....both with lock problems. Any advice on this is appreciated:
85' Wagon: when I bought this it had two keys, one for the ignition and one for the door lock. But only the drivers side door lock will unlock with a key. The passenger side and the tailgate will not unlock with the key. So the problem is either wrong key for those locks or the lock cylinders have gone bad. What's my best approach? - buy a new set of cylinders and ignition so I can have a single key? (Can you even buy these?) - take this to a lock smith to diagnose/fix? - other? '87 Sedan: the little flap that protects the passender side lock cylinder broke preventing the key from entering. Plus, the key has never worked on the trunk lock. Can I: - fix that flap without replacing the whole cylinder or handle (I have not taken it apart yet)? - get a new properly keyed cylinder for the trunk or have it rekeyed? Thanks -Harv |

Hmmm, I got a few reads on this one but no responses....is that because I was not specific enough or is it not an appropriate question for this forum?
I guess the most important thing I'm looking for is how to get all the locks working in my 1985 wagon and just off of one key. If there is someway to have them rekeyed (or to obtain a kit to replace all the locks and ignition) it would be good to know. Thanks -harv |

More on door locks...and keys
I searched for cylinder lock repair found tons of stuff. I knew to look, cause I have done lots of repairs on the locks and commented on several posts. anyway, ya gotta take apart the doors and get the locks out and clean them out. it also sounds like either your ignition or the door locks or both have been changed and are no longer correct to your vin. good luck. I've had a related question since I got my car - my first MB, first diesel. Are you supposed to be able to operate the door locks and the ignition with a single key? My doors unlock with the flat edge key and my ignition uses the regular cut key. Was my ignition swapped out with a generic cylinder?

You can buy the set at the dealer, all five of them or you can call our sponsor maybe he can order them for you. The key when used on the passenger door will only open that door on my car. Same with the trunk.

That's what I thought. Got to buy a W124 (or SD?) if you want each lock to power all doors

Alright! thanks for the responses. I'll check the dealer to see what the cost is and then with the sponsor here.
As far as the master and valet keys, I have both for the '87, but neither will open the trunk. Let me get this straight, for the '85 wagon (123), I can get to the lock cylinders without taking the door apart, but the '87 sedan (124), I need to take the door panel off to get to it? Yikes, I'd better order that manual I've been procrastinating on.... |

then just drive out the drift pin and pull out the tumbler and start cleaning... dab a bit of grease on the OUTSIDE of the tumbler and put it back in. John

I can get the door panel off my 87 in under a minute, I actually prefer these panels (slide down clips) to any other door panel I've ever messed with (usually push-on clips).

Thanks for all the advice. Very helpful.
Now, I think I'll plan to do this on a day that is not so dark and dreary (Seattle winter weather you know) since I have to do this in my driveway.... |

I forgot to add that you in no way need a manual to pull the door panel.

To add to that, you don't need to remove the door panel to remove the exterior door handle and keyhole assembly either.
