Cleaning up Grandmas Mercedes.

ok. I'm helping my aunt cleanup my grandmas 1996 E300D. she had a few questions so she took some pics and i'm here to pass them on to you guys.

here are the questions.

1) the drivers mirror doesn't spring back. my grandma had put some ductape on the mirros to keep it from folding agenst the car in the wind. is ther a way to replace the spring?

2) how do you get the cup holder to fold shut. looks like grandma used it every day so its stuck in the open position.

3) what is this little hammer looking thing. it was in the glove box with all the paperwork from the dealer.

thanks

Nik

I guess you decided to purchase that Honda...most certainly a few less headaches.

On my 1998 E300, 1999 E320, and 2001 E320, I have found a crank (similar to the hammer-like object you have) that is used to manually open and close the sunroof by removing the left plastic component from the dome light (it just snaps right off) and finding a small hole by the light bulb.

The mirror assemblies are very temperamental on 210 cars...I have had to replace my right side mirror twice on the 1998 at a tune of $400. However, I think someone posted a way to perform a DIY mirror repair (search for W210 mirror).

The cup holders are also an extremely odd design. Try cleaning some of the crud out with a can of compressed air or dry lubricant. These require some manipulation since a new unit is also about $100.

She got herself a Toyota Avolon. I hope after so long of pumping diesel she remembers to pass up the green handels and go for the black ones.

Well, luckily the fuel inlet is smaller that the diesel, so the nozzel will not fit, resulting in being unable to rest the pump nozzle in the filler neck. Now if she decides to hold the pump nozzle steady and pump at the same time...different story.

She lives on the orchard in the same old house she has always lived in. my uncle lives on the other side of the property and has a fuel pump with both Diesel and gas for the orchard vehicles. My aunt last night was telling me all about the car and I told her that I was afraid that she might feed the new car the wrong fuel. My aunt immediately called my uncle and told him to change the locks on the pump so she could only unlock the gas.

There is a spring in the mirror assemblie, they break. If everything is still in there you can fix it with some epoxy. If not you have to buy the guts they run about $400.

No offence to Grandma but my god the interior of that car is beat! Thats like the W210 that one of the agents at the office has, looks like 50 kids and dogs party inside it.

yeah tell me about it, my car was the same way when i got it. its not that dirty, like gorse dirty, but if you never clean it for like 5 years its pretty bad. my car cleaned up pretty easly, it was like 8 years of dust compressed into the car. its like everyting inside the car has a protective layer of dust so thick that the dust is getting up the mass to become a layer of dirt

Its on its way to the detailer during that week between the holidays. i'll post up some pics once it gets all spiffy.

Poor car!!!

To close the cup holder, press down on the silver 'button'. The assembly will rotate and retract into the housing. The one in the picture looks to be broken, as the claws are out of phase with the base.

Nah thats nothing, you should see how some of the RE agents trash there MB's! Yikes!

My sister is the same way, she never washes her car ever. The interior is covered crap and track clothing.

Just bothers me more I guess because I keep my cars so clean.

Lightbulb clean cup holder

It appears that your cup holder is the same as mine on myu 98 E300d. If you look at it closly and do it right the whole assembly will come out and then you can wash it properly and it may then work. The problem with that is I believe---it has to be retracted to come out.

If you have to clean the cup holder to get it out, be careful that you don't use too much liquid. You don't want it to get in the works.

Are you planning to sell the car?
