W123-Brake Fluid Reservoir Question

On top of the brake fluid reservoirs on my W123 300D's are two buttons and an electrical connection at each one. What are these buttons and wire for?

Each black button is the reservoir fluid level sensor. Each compartment is measured independently. When the level is low each switch will turn on the Red "Brake" light on the dash to let you know that the fluid in one or both of the chambers is low.
Pressing on the black rubber button top will test the contacts and turn on the red "Brake" light in the dash.

Mine did not work this time. A few days ago I thought that the brakes were getting a little spongy. The rear chamber was empty. Are these brake systems front-rear or cross split?

my question exactly

I was just going to ask about the front back or cross. I let the rear get low (leak?) and I bleed the passanger rear but that only got me a minimal amount of break action. I should just do a complete brake inspection but it is cold here. Have not been in any hurry as I was not going to drive it. Well there is no snow here in Michigan (yet) and my son is coming home from college and we might need it.

The warning lights did not come on and I had topped it off just a couple weeks before. I have not found any sign of a break fluid leak, but it leaks so much oil, it would be hard to tell. No sign around the wheels, anyway.

What is up with Braingear?

front and rear

I think JIMMYL is saying that the front chamber is for the front two wheels and the rear is for the rear wheels.

This will narrow down my search for a leak. Thanks

Lots of fluid disappearing but not visible would lead me to suspect a brake booster leak. It goes in the booster case but does not leak out. This is the most likely candidate if you cannot find the fluid anywhere else.

Let me clarify that statement. The master cylinder is leaking into the brake booster. Where is attach's is an Oring between the booster and master cylinder. If the orings INSIDE the master cylinder are leaking the route that the fluid will take is to drip into the booster, not past the large flat oring between the MC and booster. So the only place it can go is into the booster cavity.
I realize I made it sound like the booster would be leaking. It is just vacuum controlled, no brake fluid goes into the booster in normal operations.

Thats clear

I think I was clear befor your last post . But now I think you might have exsplained why I thought it was my master cylinder before I noticed the fluid level going down (pedel going down at red lights). Fluid loss lead me to think leak. You might have explained why it is Both. I can stop looking at wheels and lines. Thanks again

I have a leak where the bottom of the reservoir where the rubber seal meets with the cylinder - is it possible to just replace the groments that connects the reservoir to the master cylinder?
