water in my left rear trunk wheel well

My 126 (1985) has wet carpet in the left rear well in the trunk. The side of the well (abutting the spare tire wall that is - the spare well is NOT damp) is also damp. It rained a few days ago (?).

The other well is dry.

Any thoughts where this water might have come from?

Your rear window is leaking. Very common on these cars. You can remove it and replace the seals.
I had the same problem. I gently peeled back the seal from where it meets the window and injected an ACRYLIC based window seal.

Usually the rear window as stated (a known place for rot). Also check the rear stop light lens seals and the trunk seal it's self. Cars kept outside have crap that piles up in the channel. Water will not flow down fast enough and can find it's way in, over the seal.

So, perhaps the new back glass was not replaced properly.....

another possibility is the sunroof drain, and water flowing down the cable. but I would check the antenna seal carefully. it may be time to climb in and get out the garden hose for a trusted friend to soak down your car...

And that should be easy to verify...

for I think there is a good chance that Ken is correct and you can prove this by slowly running a garden hose over the window on the side where the leak appears to be most occuring... and IF this proves out and the window replacement was recent enough, you are justified in taking it back to have the installer make it right!
Regards,

Exclamation Vac it up good!

If the rear windshield Seal was not replaced when the glass was replaced, then that SEAL is the main suspect, But if the seal and the glass were replaced the leak is most likely a workmanship problem with maybe a chance of warranty ...however, infiltration could also be from more than one source. Perhaps the seal and the sunroof drains?
Here is the list of candidates in order of likelyhood:
1) Open window
2) Rear windshield seal
3) Door weatherseal
4) Sunroof drains (Use weed-eater string to chase the drains)
5) Antenna mount
6) Front windshield seal
7) Bonnet(Hood) Hinge drain channels
8) Hole in floorpan
9) Tail-light ?? (I suppose it is possible with repaired bodies. Frankly, I've never experienced a tail-light leak)

After the repair Try to get it as dry as possible, Vaccum and place moisture absorbers in trunk and cab. I suggest you remove the plastic trunk liners and dry out underneath to keep out rust, mildew, and that awful moldy smell.

My 300d has a drain under that area in the trunk (both sides). Check for a plugged drain. It won't solve your leak problem, but it may help keep the water from building up in your trunk.

You know, I just drove 2 hours in the pouring rain, and I have no leaked water. I DID find this very drain - a plug with 3 small holes - when looking for water entry points, and filled it with silicone the other day; and today found no water in the wheel indentation!
