reserve fuel supply

I have a question on the reserve fuel on the diesels. The little triangle that is in the dash lights up on start-up and then goes off. I have had the fuel guage needle where the whole line of the bottom of the tank shows, and the light nevers comes on. I have always been somewhat afraid to go much further on it for fear of running out of fuel. Does anyone know how this works. It always surfaces on a holiday when it is very tought to find petro.

ive gotten 30 miles out of mine with the light on the whole time.. but thats pushing it

and you dont mean petro .. you mean diesel.. right?

The reserve is about 3 gallons. You should be able to get about ~60 miles before you start to feel a powerloss from air bubbles.

When does the reserve light glow on yours?? Mine like has never came on & I have had it below the empty line.

TheDon 12-25-2006 09:29 PM

once mine touches the line for R it lights up...

Mine will come on after a few miles on the empty mark. If yours does not come on, it could be a bad light bulb or fuel level sender.

yea... remove the fuel sender and clean it.. very easy to do .. just be careful of the guide wires..

sender

How is the sensor removed..this would be my first time tinkering with the tank...my reserve light never lights, and gauge is off

thanks

i think the guage and the warning are not connected. in other words you could have a totally non functioning guage and the warning light would function correctly.

i could be wrong but that is my impression.

i am guessing your guage is reading falsely low.

The level sender can be accessed by removing the first aid kit box on the rear window deck.

Just saw my reserve light for the first time yesterday (87), it came on when the needle dipped below the last tick just above the Empty line (1/4 tank mark?).

I ran plum out of fuel a few weeks ago, damn light never did come on, it lights up nice and bright when I start the car though. Ima check my sensor too.
