Anyone ever convert from the mechanical fan to a mechanical one on a 123? The fan clutch went out on my 82 wagon & a friend at work mentioned converting to an electric one. How hard would it be & would it be worth it? I've heard that electric fans give some HP back.

a search for electric fan found tons, but this is the one I was looking for.
Do I need my rad fan??

I used an electric fan for a short period of time. Electric fans are pretty much pointless except on FWD vehicles with transverse engines or offset radiators like the Audi 5000.

Very long story short, fix what's broken and don't give much thought to the electric fan idea.

After reading up on it more, I've decided to stick with the clutch. After all, it did last 24 years! I rather doubt an electric one could say that. I'm sure there'll be a big improvement with a properly working clutch too. Mine has about 1/2" of in-out play on the shaft & is about ready to eat the radiator!!

... which are you talking about?? My 1980 240D has a direct drive fan without any clutch and I'm sure this is in large part responsible for much of the highway speed noisyness!
Q - Does anyone know if you can fit a clutch-driven fan on my 240D?

You should be able to swap the waterpump pulley, fan clutch and fan from a 300D.

It will probably be louder because the 300D fan will move more air.

........only when the clutch is fully coupled........which, 99% of the time........it's not.

Thats what I was thinking too Brian. This harkens me back to when I was a teenager and replaced a clutched fan on my 1951 flat-head V-8 Ford with a flex fan and the thing made an unGodly amount of noise! I was surprised to see a 1980 Benz with a rigid drive fan.
