I have been using 5w40 for years. I don't see why 0w40 would be a problem.
Cold starts are tough with 15w40 when it gets down to freezing. You can really hear it dragging.

Unless you plan on driving in sub-zero temperatures, yes.
The best option is Mobil Delvac 1 5W40. |

Our '83 is on the 0-40, but will be switched to 5w40 as soon as it shows up in the store....which should be soon since they made a spot/price on the shelf for it. It seems to run fine on the 0-40, it idles rougher than my car (slightly) but it has always done that, even when it had 15-40 dino in it.

I'm running Mobil 1 0-40 in my daughters 85 300D with 185k on it.
I live in Iowa and temps can be -F for several weeks in a row and consistently below 32F. I have the block heater timed for 3hrs preheat in the morning. She drives it to the high school where it sits for 12hrs or more by the time she gets done with practices or a game. I need it to start. I run Mobil 1 15-40 in the summer. 5K on the filter 10K on the oil. |

The new M1 5W40 is supposed to enter the Wallymart distribution chain next month. It's already arrived at lots of regional auto part chain stores. The product is labelled TurboDiesel Truck 5W40, available in gals. and qts. |

Thats what I meant, it says "Mobil 1 5w40 Turbo Diesel Truck" on the shelf.... Thats what I have been using in my car, and plan to use in both cars once its available a little cheaper.

Guys, the 0 rating only has to do with the CCS or cold crank simulator rating of the oil.
It is still way too thick at cold start-up for optimal lubrication, it is just not as bad as a 5W or 15W. If the oil is rated for compression engines and the 100C viscosity is roughly in the 14 to 15 cSt range, you are good to go. The only drawback I see in a 0W-40 vs a 5W-40 is that, assuming the same basestocks, the 0W will have to use more viscosity index improvers to get the better low temp performance. These polymers can tend to shear, reducing the 100C viscosity. The 0W-40 oils have improved in this matter in recent years though.

A 0W-40 oil is not hardly thinner than even a 15W-40 oil AT NORMAL OPERATING TEMPERATURE. Both are the same viscosity at 100C.
Remember that the 0W means that the oil doesn't thicken up as much when it is colder as a 5W, 10W or 15W oil would. There are NO oils that get thinner as they get colder. Even the Mobil 1 0W-40 oil is about 5 times thicker at 40C than it is at 100C. At operating temperature, a 0W-40 oil will be thicker than even a straight 30 weight oil. Also remember that the worst diesel rated oil available today is still probably better than the best oil available in 1983.

hatty, are you sure? I thought all the 0W stuff had the "for Gasoline engines" label on them... cool if it has the CI or CH etc, I may use it in jan or feb... only time it gets REALLY cold down here in Mecklinburg....

I talked to Mobil on the 0-40w oil. They say that they don't recommend it in the old diesel's. I ask then what would you suggest that mobil makes?? They told me to use the Mobil 5W-40 full synthetic diesel truck in it.
