Someone else had mentioned that if you place a minimum $100 order at Autobarn.com, you can get free shipping. That means you can purchase 16 qts of the new Turbodiesel 5W40 oil @ $7 ea yielding two oil changes.

It's actually a $150 minimum order, but they are having a $15 off "Sale" at the moment.

You don't want to use xW30 above 77 F ambient, according to the owners manual.
This same site recommended 15w40 when they made it.

NAPA will get it for you if they don't stock it, and it's only 6.50 there
advance auto will also order it, and their price is only 5.60...

15W40 is still OK, 0W30 is not.

I'm the one who posted about the free shipping from Autobarn. I just ordered it last week and it was free shipping over $100. I ordered 16 quarts. Maybe they changed their promo.

Absolutely no. I'm running mine one 0-40 or 5-50. No difference in oil consumption.

0-40 is thinner in extremely low temperatures and at high temperatures.

Not quite true. There are several 0W30 Euro oils meeting 229.5 spec. MBz sets a minimum HT/HS spec and that's the value that must be considered. There are thick 0W30 oils and thin 0W30 oils, since the API specs are so broad you could drive a Class 8 truck thru them

Guys, I'd like to be able to share this UOA. It covers two oil changes with the M1 0W40 oil followed by 11k run with ELF's 0W30 229.5 oil. How do the results look? (2002 E320 (gasser ) wagon)

Probably true, but my owner's manual only recommends xW30 up to 77F ambient, so I'm not going to be using it above 77F. That precludes it for year-around use where I live. In addition, I'm not interested in using any 0Wx oils in my 616/617. 5W40 works just fine as an year-around oil, so there is no advantage of using a 0Wx. The 229.5 spec did not exist when my engines were built. I'm sure you can "get away" with using other oil weights, but why would you want to?

Probably due to the fact there have been serious advances in lube technology courtesy of the European auto mfrs over the past twenty years

Do you know what the "CAFE" equivalent is for Europe? It's still around 22MPG in the USA.

If one is worried about 0w 40, just add a couple qts of 5w 20 and be happy. I have mixed for years with no problems...

as for older diesels, when they were mfd. there were just two weights of diesel oil: straight 30 and straight 10 weight, series 3 oil. Cat and IH diesels of the 60's indicated 10weight oil was good up to 80 degrees F for SHORT PERIODS. Never had any trouble with those engines with just the 2 grades of diesel oil.

I believe Mobil1 Turbo Diesel truck 5W40 is the same as Mobil Delvac1 5W40 having looked at the spec sheets side by side. I just dumped 2 gals of Delvac 1 5W40 in the E300 yesterday.
