606 poly V belt
Doing some 100,000 mile preventive maintenance on my 210 diesel. Just changed the poly V belt. This thread was helpful http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/74648-w210-606-serp-belt-tensioner-replacement.html#post469105
Some observations for those who still need to do it. Mine was original I believe at 100,000 miles and 7.5 years. Lots of little cracks in it. Maybe it would have given me many more miles, but in my mind, it was definitely due for replacement. I threw my old one in my trunk in case of emergency. I did have to remove the fan shroud but left the fan in place. Probably would have been easier with the fan removed, but I opted not to do that. I also removed the front most belly pan to access the belt from below. I needed to do that in order to make sure everything was properly positioned. You probably could get away with doing everything from above, but I felt better double checking from the top and bottom. I also worked from underneath to position the new belt. Did you replace the "shock absorber" at the same time? Probably a good idea to do so. I did mine and the shock at 99k.

Did not do the shock - only the belt. I know on my 123 the shock was rebuildable, i.e. new rubber bushings, etc. Is there such a kit for the 606? Is there a symptom that tells you the shock a kaput?

Zero resistance = shock kaput.

I think it's a R&R item. I just did it to prevent an avoidable failure for the next 100k miles. Up to you, just my thoughts.

How much was it? I assume it's a quick and easy job?

Very cheap. Should take about 20 minutes to do. Its possible to remove without taking the fan off, the bottom bolt has juuuuusssstt enough space to move out of the way.

Ditto, you're prolly ruin the new belt if the old one is on it's way out. Mine made a strange knocking sound with the engine running at idle, like something in the front bumper region was loose.

Mine wasn't that easy, I couldn't get the bottom bolt out, so I had my indy do it instead...

the damper replacement is quite easy on the W210 diesel. I remove the fan and the water pump pulley and it's just a quick swap. I replaced one (as preventitive maintenance) a month ago that probably didn't need to be done, but the owner wanted it changed. I have a good unit in my basement. IIRC, the new part is around $40.

You CAN just barely get the lower bolt backed out JUST enough to slip the bolt back enough to pull the damper. Drop tension on the spring so you can rotate the assembly up and down for the bolt head to clear the rim of the WP pulley.
For those of you who dont have enough clearance (some doent for some reason), the end of the bolt sticks out of the pivot arm when installed and can be filed down 1/16-1/8" which will allow it to back out far enough.

Get a can of oil or WD40 while you are out....helps to have sufficient lubrication that you can turn the head of the bolt under the WP pulley by hand rather than 1/6th turns by wrench.
