"S" gear

I have often wondered if any one else uses this gear like running in city traffic where you want to keep the power curve up on the older diesels??

I use S in the city if I won't be going over 45mph, then its just too loud/annoying. I also drive mine like a manual though, I let off the throttle, shift, then go back on.

I thought they were supposed to drop down in first gear if you stepped down on the accelerator from a stop sign. Is it ok on the transmission to just manually shift it like that?

Mine always starts off in first unless I am doing a rolling stop....

MB actually hawked the ability to shift manually as one of the "features" of these transmissions....so I would say its fine to do.

They drop down to 2nd or third when in drive, but will start in first when stepped down when the gear is in S.

The only problem with shifting manually in a 6-cylinder is the lack of "B". From 1st to 2nd you need to keep in "2" until you want to shift. Then pop it in "3". QUICKLY fish back to "2" to hold the gear until you want to shift to "3". Do so when ready, and finally shift to "D" last. With the "B" function of the AT, one can work their way up the stick.

I sometimes put mine in S if I'm in traffic at a speed that makes it shift back and forth between 3ed and 4th every-time I accelerate. Otherwise I just keep it in drive. There is no real advantage to manually up-shifting through the gears if the tranny and cable are adjusted correctly.

Mine shifts like a dream

A little harsh when cold, and a little slow to engage into drive when hot, but shifting is total perfection, and when I want it to jump when going between say 30 and 55, the downshift is sure and swift. You won't catch me tooling along in traffic with that lever is "S". Probably am inclined to do so on the Lincoln Town car. You know, that is a big car also for 4.6 L engine, and it really needs those gears bad.

My car shifts great now too with a lot of work tweaking everything since I purchased it. Someone once told me it's not good to lug a diesel around. That is why I sometimes just pull it back in "S" in that slower traffic to keep it responsive and to keep from plugging it up.

I just keep mine in D, its an auto it does its own thing. Its hard to talk on the phone and work while messing with the shifter. If you let it rev it makes more noise which I don't like.

In heavy traffic by all means don't chew up your brakes. Drop it down a gear or two and let the engine slow you down.

The only thing I hate about the gear box's in there cars is you have to beat them to get a down shift.

My 4-3 downshift works all the time very quickly so I don't really see the need to keep it in S. I think the only time I have was my last autocross so it wouldn't upshift in the turns.

I have the 16V for manual fun, I let the 300 do its own thing.

That's for the pre 1981 models. For the 1981 and newer diesels, they were given 1st gear start w/o having to floor it when they switched to the 722.3 transmissions. Though, some members here still have 2nd gear start on their post 1980 MB diesels for some reason.

i love a stick too.

but in my automatic benzes about the only time i use s is when on a two lane anticipating a passing maneuver with not much time. it gets the turbo on boost in a 300turbo. not as necessary with a non turbo but useful then too.
