Transmission oil change

The question is for a E320 97, is the auto transmission the same as E300 diesel? this is my wife's car, it has about 73K miles, talked to the shop tech about changing oil and filter on this sealed transmission, he recommends we do it now, he also stated that if the car had 110K or more miles changing oill/filter would be a very risky proposition and would be better to leave it alone.

110k miles on the original oil/filter? At that age, the old oil may be the only thing holding it together inside.

I changed my ATF at 170,000 miles. It had never been done before (I'm not the first owner).

Its been fine ever since.

Should be the same trans (722.6xx) as a 97-99 E300. Some of the 96's had the 722.4xx early on based on detail I've found.

Gilly did a write up a few years ago on the 722.6 and purported to know of one owner with original fill who had 400K on the clock with no problems.

I'd change yours when you get time and then do it again in 50-100K pending your driving style.

Isn't this one of the newer trannies with the "lifetime" fill? To paraphrase the quote from the thread that I now can't find "it's sealed for life, but we didn't say whose life"

Sounds like the same kind of marketing that brings us sealed, lifetime car batteries. Yeah, change it at some point, but there's no hurry.

Some people claim that you really never need to change the fluid. While others say you should at some point. I fall into the later camp and think you should do it once or twice.

Search 722.6 and see what you think. Remember you have to use the MB trans fluid, you also need the dip stick tool.
