84 300 D turbo odd starting issue
I've already searched the forums but can't find anything quite like my issue. My 300D runs like a V8 and normaly idles perfectly. A few weeks ago - and with colder temps here in Pa. it started an odd habit. When it's started cold, it roars to life and idles perfect - then after about 10 seconds, it starts to shake and buck and sometimes stall. One you drive it even 1 block, this all goes away. I run redline additive every tank full and the only thing I can say that's questionable about the motor is that it only gets about 22 MPG. If the car idled bad from the start there would be many possibilities but it starts great - for 10 or so seconds. It runs great after that as well. I thought fuel line air leak, but there is never any fuel on my garage floor. I work on it running in my garage as well so with pressure I still don't see a leak. Could injector leak off cause this? Anyone have a similar issue out there? Thanks, Andy

Check your glow plugs for proper resistance. Also check fuel filters.

300D starting issues
Thanks for the reply! The filters are all new and I've replaced some of the glow plugs and the others check out OK. If it was glow plugs you would think that it would not want to start or start very badly. It starts great no matter how cold, then after 10 seconds or so it starts to buck.? Thanks again, Andy

I would think your glow plugs are fine since it starts right up and idles fine for 10 seconds.
Maybe a main fuel filter that is starting to clog would let it start fine, but restrict initial flow on increased demand. (that part is a wild arse guess...) You can have a fuel system air leak without seeing it on the pavement. It can leak back into the tank. Problem with that is it usually causes initial startup problems. A clogged tank strainer is also a possibility. See what others say.......

After the car has sat overnight, pull the spin-on fuel filter and check if it is full to the brim. If not, you probably have a small leak somewhere which is allowing the filter to slowly drain down overnight.
