Discussions on synthetic vs. dino?
OK ... I know this has been discussed as nauseum and beyond, so I'm not trying to start a new arguement about the best oil ... but I am having trouble on the search feature because of the abundance of threads that match the search criteria. I.e., it turns up a million results about random topics in which oil happens to be mentioned. Can someone link me to a previous discussion about the possible merits of switching to sythetic? It's something I'm considering and I want to read up on it. I know there's been some LOOoooOOng threads regarding it ... can someone direct me to a good one?

You just started an oil thread!!!!! Burn the witch burn the witch!!!!!.. jk jk jk
Im converting to synthetic soon as I get the $$... This is one topic your going to want to read up on. Search like you did and read the longest thread on the subject, then the next longest. You'll get the idea on what to do. |

Sorry to add to this one, but the answer is pretty simple. Leaks from changing to synthetic oil are largely a thing of the past. They still clean out the inside of your engine very well and resist sludge formation. You can drive further on them if desired, but it's still more expensive than running non-synthetic oil.
I've opened up gasser engines which were fed a steady diet of Mobil 1 and they were not just cleaner inside; they were spotless. Non-synthetic oil always leaves a brown film everywhere. From what I can see, the only downside is the price. I think it's worth the difference, considering how much more you spend for fuel to move your car through the change interval. |

I'm switching my 87 to it as soon as I get some time. I'll be replacing the oil pressure sending unit and oil level sending unit at the same time.
Got the Mobil Delvac 1 5W-40 in the garage.

There is always the option of cheaper synthetics, although they wont be as high in the group of synthetics they will still do much better then dino's.
For example rotella 5w40 "synthetic" is about $14 per jug at walmart for the same price i can get Chevron Delo 400! so what would be the better option? even if it isnt a mobil 1 synthetic its still a synthetic!

That's perfectly good oil, I use it when I get too lazy to plan ahead and order M1 because I can always find it at walmart.

Of all the discussions around various boards about synthetic vs dino, it can seem to go either way. I have actually had a personal discussion about this with two different people in two different places. One was an oil company rep at a large auto show, and the other was a chemical engineer on an oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico. Both of them did everything they could to convince me on sticking with dino oil (to my surprise!!)
I just use regular 'ol dino oil and change it every 3K miles. If I lived in an area where the temperature changes were more severe, I wouldn't think twice about synthetic. |

I classify myself as "confused" on the issue.
I run Shell Rotella dino with STP Oil Additive - a synthetic additive. Ken300D

These days, if you get a leak after switching to synthetic oil, you were going to have one anyway sooner or later. |
