My wagon is low in the rear
82 300td.
Her a$$ end sits very low after she's parked for an hour or so. As soon as I fire her up, I can feel the back end quickly raising back up. The self leveling valve looks like it has a drip, but nothing very serious. Could this be the air cells??

Probably not. Mine does the same. I think the valve that delivers the hydraulic pressure and holds it is leaking down over time. They can be rebuilt.

I'd say it's probably the suspension valve like stated before. If you have a leak in the system the rear tends to settle while sitting, then bumps up when the car is started. The valves are rebuildable. The kit is called a washer kit. It's kind of spendy for what you get. It's a little box that has a few washers, o-rings, and a couple of springs. I paid about $70 for mine.
Make sure you pay VERY close attention to how the valve comes apart when you take it a part. There are several parts inside that can go in different ways, which can result in a improperly working valve. Don't ask how I know. Here is a post that ought to explain things pretty well. The part number is there too. Wagon rear suspension valve rebuild

If you have the system depressurised then check your cells- when you remove them stick a pencil in the end (eraser end!)- if you can depress the membrane inside then you ought to replace that one. If you can't then it's good. Simple as that.

wait a minute!!! Wow!! I feel stupid... I have nearly NOTHING in my hydraulic fluid tank...
So if I refill it, and rebuild the valve, I should be good to go!!!

Do you want the valve rebuild kit? I ordered one and never used it, its brand new in the box. I don't think I need it, maybe we can work out a deal. If you're interested email me at 424studios@gmail.com

The leveling valve was worn out on my TD. It would bleed down overnight. I never fixed it because it worked fine once the engine was running.

Is there any reason to worry about a valve that leaks down overnight as long as it comes up when the engine starts?
