glow plug replacement and issues

My 83 300d turbo started missing on cold starts.

Then the glow plug light would not come on at all but the relay would still cycle so if i let it time out it would start but run rough .

I know on this car that if the light does not come on i have at least two plugs out.

I usually unplug the harness from the relay and use a jumper from the positive battery terminal and touch each glow plug terminal.

The ones that do not spark are dead.

This time i bought five new ones. (i save the old good ones for the next time i need to replace any)

I used a glow plug hole reamer this time and was amazed how much carbon it reamed out of the hole.

From now on i will ream the holes at every plug change.

The new plugs screwed in by hand until they bottomed out against the seat only then did i need a wrench. (always use anti seize)

Starts and runs perfect again.

Is it just me or does the car run better after new plugs?

It seems to not only start better but also run better.

Just thought i would post my glow plug experiences.

Steve

It's good to hear positive results. I'm not convinced that my glow plugs always work (they test okay, but my light only comes on occationally - usually after one glow plug cycle) and my cold weather starting is not too good (about 25 deg.F). I had not thought about testing the glow plug directly with the positive jumper cable. I assume that you just touch the tip of the glow plug with the cable and if it is shorted, it will not be grounded and therefore will be no spark? How many plugs did you find that were bad using this method?

I'll have to try reaming them too, it's worth a shot at least.

You will find that if you touch the end of the GP (just "brush" it) with a hot 12 volt wire and you see a spark the GP is ok. No spark, its toast ... DON'T do this test with the old loop style GPs. The "body" of the plug must be grounded.

I found two bad ones this way on pencil style plugs.

Great starting ever since.
